Post by: simond on August 06, 2017, 11:47:56 AM
Has anyone found one of these before? I can't find one similar anywhere!

As far as I've found out the verse is from the Bible. Acts 11.24 which is Barnabus who says cleave (join) with the Lord and receive his blessings.
The pendant was worn as a symbol that bore witness to their faith and also worn as a good luck charm.
Didn't see any reference to date. Probably 1800's

Thank you Val. I had a look with the loupe last night and it's annotated Romans 11:23 on one side and Acts 12:9 on the other. I wasn't sure if it had significance to any specific church or branch of Christianity? My wife loves it though and I think I'll gold plate it for her, as it originally was by evidence of gilt residue on one side  :)

I saw an old post for a gold coloured one on eBay. I tried to get back to the original post for more info. I lost it and couldn't find it again. I was hoping for an age of the pendant.
From what I could find the verse has been in use for hundreds of years by a number of Christian religions so not just, for example, Catholics or Protestants.
Always nice to find something like that and spend a bit of time on the history behind it. It's amazing how many detectorists get hooked on history, a subject they hated when at school.

The research is half of the fun isn't it  :)

That's a nice find there Simon. I imagine someone was upset when they lost it.

Picking up on your last point Val I have to agree with you. I had no time for history when I was at school but now I realise just how daft I was. The more I find, the more interested I get!

I think the older we get the more interested we become in it because we are part if it (sorry it's philosophical Thursday)  :D

Ha Ha Ha know what you mean. Love watching the Antiques program and similar but we often have a laugh over some of the items.  We often say 'We used to have one of those back in ? ' or 'I remember when that happened.'

Sad or what  :'( :D

Very interesting find, just wondering if it was carried as a kind of religious Talisman during the English Civil war,its just that he word "cleave" was used in religious quotations during that period in history !!...just a thought.
Great find,well detected and saved...
Just thought you may want to see this little find I detected a while ago...its "silver" and it says "cherish and prosper on one side... Unfortunately I cannot make out what is on the other....it was obviously on a chain at some point, but sadly now broken.

Very nice. I'm going to gold plate it (as it once was) for my wife so rather than going in a tin it will be re-used and worn again.
