Title: Medieval Limoge Mount
Post by: celticspikey on June 28, 2017, 07:34:28 PM
It's been ages since I have been out in the fields mainly due to working on mother in law's house. Today I decided enough was enough, with the Deus charged up and reverting back on the V3 setup I found myself on some cut pasture next to a medieval site.
I only had 2hrs before work, various signals lead etc, part of a bronze pot, and then a deep signal and up popped this lovely little artefact from a good depth.
It's a Medieval enamelled Limoge mount from around 12th-13th cent, or earlier but I don't think so?
It is T shape and would have been attached to the base of a large wooden cross as can be seen by the 4 holes. Design of an Angel, with the symbol of St Matthew? with inverted wings on an enamelled back ground with traces of gilding.
Pictures are prior to cleaning as you can see, I am reluctant to clean myself due to the enamelling.....Back to house for a few days now...

That is going to clean up and look beautiful. Well found Paul.
Had a look at a few and none of them have such well preserved enamel.

Just been having a closer look at the second pic where you found the mount. It occurs to me that it might have been the original place where the cross stood. What do you think ?

Shame I didn't take up detecting years ago when I lived up in the Midlands. Plus we nearly bought a house in Tamworth. Just think about the hidden history around there.

Val it never crossed ( pardon the pun) my mind, I guess it could be where the cross was located, who knows.  ;)

Quite possibly one of the most interesting artefacts i have ever seen on this forum. I would rather find something like that over any coin. Would love to see it 'cleaned' in all its glory. Great find, hope you treasure it.

Thanks guys appreciate all the interest, I am showing it to FLO soon and he is putting me in touch with some one who can clean and stabilise the metal and more importantly the enamelling, which appears losing its colour unfortuantly.
Trouble is they charge £45 p/h....I'm not sure how long it would take to stabilise and conserve. Being non precious metal I guess it's not worth any great value, it's value to me is in its rarity, history and beauty.
Will keep you updated.....Paul. ;)

That really is something special.

You wonder how someone could have lost something like that - it would be interesting to see if they FLO thought it might be a reformation loss / hiding. Like everyone else, I'd be really interested to see the conserved item.

As to cost - I asked about getting an Ant of Laelianus cleaned - and the guy said he would have to charge for a whole day's lab time.........so in my case the coin hasn't been cleaned....
