Here's a few finds from a couple of searches on a roman site.Despite the field being cultivated and in crop, I had a few visits with nothing show, the Silaqua I have just found tucked away in my finds pouch, it's a bit debased and was probably overlooked as a bronze!! however a quick clean shows it to be otherwise. The other finds came from a 4hr session on the field it just shows several visits with nothing to show and then up comes a good selection of roman and the bronze stater.....the 2 brooches are early roman 1st-2nd cent, a roman spoon bowl and a few grots. The small bronze piece is the blade of a broken axe, one day I'll get a hole one. Fields are getting high in crop and it's that time of year when searching becomes a bit more difficult, so best of luck out there. Spikey...Ooops the bronze stater is bottom left, just put the better side up. ;)

Well I could clean it for you :) - or you could try this method: - wrap it in silver foil, put it in a container, put in a good amount of washing soda (although some people swear by baking soda with a tiny pinch of salt) and then pour in boiling water. You'll see bubbles coming out of the mixture. When activity has died down a bit - and before the water has completely cooled, remove the coin and give it a gentle brushing - I use a horsehair brush, or a sponge, but some people use a really old, worn toothbrush to clean the 'black' off it. It will be very clean then, and there are a number of ways to tone them down.

I sometimes find that with this cleaning method, I then have to dip the coin in dilute acid afterwards as there are sometimes some stubborn black spots which don't go otherwise (and conversely dipping the coin in acid first won't always get rid of the corrosion), but I've been able to clean pretty much any silver coin with these methods.
