Title: i enjoyed the research on this one
Post by: handyman [Alan} on April 18, 2017, 05:46:57 PM
I pulled this little beauty out on Saturday, and it has proved to be quite a rare find, yet it was found in a very remote location.

It's dated 1816, and at first i thought Geo III .... but he faces right and this faces left ..... then i spotted the 1/2 F  which led me to think French, or Swiss, or Austrian, or German .. .. on getting home, and using mr google ... it turned out to be a coin from the time of Louis XVIII.

Then i had a thought re Napoleonic wars .. only to discover that they were officially over in November 1815 .. so this coin is part of the 2nd re-coinage of the reign of Louis XVIII immediately after the cessation of war. which means it must have been brought into Britain, possibly by a returning soldier from that campaign ... and of course, not 10 miles from where i found the coin was a major army barracks used in the time of the Napoleonic wars. [and later!]

Don't you just love the research that such coins bring!!

enjoy

Well researched there, sometimes the intriguing results of digging into  the history is as fascinating as the find.

Thanks for the comments gals n guys .... i was speaking to the landowner and he pulled out the deeds of the farm, and identified the landowner at that time. It turns out that the landowner was based 6 miles away, [in his obligatory stately home!]. His estate has been well used for troop movements and exercises for well over 300 years. [hence the large amount of ammunition we find in the fields as well!]

still, it all adds to the story.

Well done all round.

Research is the name of the game in our hobby.

The internet helps a lot compared with when I started out. ;) :) Jerry.

Great research, but the coin is quite worn - so maybe it was kept as a keepsake before being lost?

Hi Roland

That's certainly a consideration to factor into the equation. Another is that these coins entered into general circulation here in the uk, passing off as sixpences.

Interestingly when i was chatting to a local numismatist at our club meeting and he made the point that silver french coinage at this time was minted in the UK, as the French mints were not allowed to mint silver coinage! .. now that's another story i have to follow up!     ;D ;D

cheers
