Title: First Love Token find
Post by: Trefor Meirionnydd on April 18, 2017, 05:34:22 PM
Had some free time today so went out locally and had my first 'Love Token' find. I think it started life as a William III sixpence and was presumably 'converted' when it was very worn. I can only guess why it was 4" down in the middle of a high sheep pasture field. It made my day   ;D

I also had a 'pot leg' and a buckle but somehow they didn't seem quite so exciting   ;)

Nice one, funny thing is my last love token was a William 111 sixpence as well it make you wonder if they were more common then. But a very nice find anyway.

William III was king of England from 1689 to 1702 13 years
i would say the bulk of love tokens found are of his coinage sixpences mainly. is there any evidence to say this was a trend during his reign, less than 13 years in circulation is that enough time to wear smooth, could people afford  a sixpence
were the coins rubbed clear as this was a serious offence at the time. Or were the coins found by a later generation, of no worth and put to use ?
When i find a love token i do have a bit of a moral argument with myself and have put the last couple back in the hole, just my view but i do have several in my coinbox
its not just the finding and digging also the history and research that make metal detecting such an addictive hobby
happy hunting

Mine is the same coin....many inscribed their messages on the coin having deleted the Kings image first,  often wonder if the lady dumped the man and chucked his token of love.....it's happened to me lol

The young fellas of the early 18th century era used mostly worn coins of William III.

There were some exceptions made using Hammered coinage and I also remember once seeing a gold love token.

I wonder what the chap received in exchange for a gold token of his love.? ;)

Happy Hunting,

Jerry.
