Title: Strange iron object
Post by: artkat on March 27, 2017, 10:09:26 PM
Any thoughts on this unusual looking iron item found approx 8 inches deep on area of pasture.
It is approx 6 inches long and has a fine point at one end and hole at the other.
Looks too fine to be linked to plowing, but I could be totally wrong.
Thanks in advance
Adrian

It's the point off a mowing machine, a bar about 5 feet long would have a row of
These attached at the front. A knife with triangular shaped sections would be inside the
Row of points. The knife moved back and forth to cut the grass. Originally horse drawn
Then pulled by tractors, went out of fashion about 1975, when movers had high speed
Rotating disk cutters. The triangle points are a common find, they were held on by 2
Rivets which often sheared off.
Happy hunting Glyn

Yup would agree it's a cutter off an Allen Scythe. Had a motorised one a few years ago and the cutter bar was about 3' long X 2 bars = lots of teeth to lose..as Glyn says It works in a similar way to a garden hedge cutter.
