Title: Saxon coin – any ideas ?
Post by: Dylan on March 27, 2017, 07:07:03 PM
I found my first ever cut-quarter last weekend and I was over the moon.  When I got home and cleaned it off I was doubly pleased as it turned out to be Saxon – another first for me!  BUT, despite having looked through lots of images on the internet and having shown it to a couple of friends who know vastly more about hammered coins than I do, I (we) still haven’t managed to identify it yet.  Any help in identifying it would be much appreciated.

Great find, well done.

Edward the Confessor Radiate/Small Cross type (Spink 1173)

Moneyer is Godwine, but moneyers of that name worked at many different mints during this reign.

Brilliant!  Thanks very much for that.  I had got as far as Godwine but after that I was stumped!

Very unusual to see a cut quarter saxon - that must make your week :)

Not just my week but probably my detecting career - I think it ranks amongst my top finds and I have had some very nice finds over the years.  As well as being an unusual find It was in such a nice condition compared to many of the other hammereds I have found, probably due to the fact that the soil in the field in which it was found was almost like sand and had virtually no stones in it.  Unfortunately I can't just go back and search the area again as I found it on a club dig so  and will have to wait until the club has another trip organised there :'(
