Title: Trade weight?
Post by: simond on February 14, 2017, 06:50:01 PM
Hi all,
I have here what I think is a lead trade weight with four vertical lines cut into one side. It measures 1.5" in diameter, 7/16" thick and weighs 3.8oz (now). If I'm correct in assuming it's a 4oz trade weight then what period would this be from? I would appreciate any suggestions.
Kind regards,
Simon.

Interesting, many thanks and it was found quite close by in Rossett. I wasn't sure about the marks being Roman as it's got four (IIII) and not Roman numerals but it tallies with the weight. It would be nice if it was  :)

Nice find. Very difficult to date. Could be Roman but could also be up to 16th century.

See the short write-up here:

Interesting article and many thanks for the response. If it is Roman then it's my first. I only realised what it was a few days later when I removed all the dried clay and, there was me thinking the day was a bust. Just goes to show that you should clean and check everything!  :)

Hi simond,nice find definitely.👏
If I was you I would not name any permissions or nearby places, probably other people near you my get it before or even worse, night hawks. So be weary of naming lands.😉
