Title: What was your first coin?
Post by: Andre on December 09, 2016, 10:39:33 PM
I sometimes wonder what was like to you guys to find your first hammered.Been out today, for a few hours with a different machine.didnt find anything relevant, but a few bits which I like, old farm implements.keep finding this glazed bits of pottery in the middle of nowhere and there's a chunk of metal, not rusted, maybe lead, which gave me a very good signal.my permission is in a good historical location, but patience is the only way in this hobby. There's a photo of my permission, the weather just held till I finished, but the soil was soggy..

Andre

I can tell you what my first hammered coin was, in fact I still have it for that reason in that it was my first. A Charles the 1st Shilling. My second one found on the same day was an Edward the 1st Penny. I would have only been about 14 or 15 at the time, so a long time ago  ;) ;), but I can remember it well, in fact I could take you back to the fields and bet I could get to within a couple of feet of where they were found. ;D ;D ;D

My first hammered was a Lizzie sixpence  1588 which was the year that the Armada was destroyed so quite a historical date. The first one is a real buzz. Keep plugging away at your permission Andre, there's a hammered waiting to be found there

Mind you, I only started in August so It's early days yet... I'm sure there are loads of hammered coins out there just waiting to be found.

Sunny day in 1999, up popped half an Edward 1st penny, then a full one and then a short cross King John.....all in half an hour........great day!
My very first coin in 1969 was a 50 p, found on a machine that cost me £1......lol

Hi finding the first hammered coin is an experience that is rarely forgotten.
In my case it was at the very beginning of detecting hobby.
It was a really pleasant Spring morning, and I was probably about the third/fourth time that I had been out my permission.
It was farmland, pastures and as I recall the grass was quite short and was a pleasure to detect on.
I'd been on the field for a couple of hours, stopped for a bite to eat and a "cuppa"
The detector I had was a new Garrett ACE 250...with its two tone "dingdong" sound,i as using it on a pre set programme.
Then about five steps from where I had been sitting I detected a very, very, clear dingdong signal....and obviously decided it's got to be something good !!.....and sure enough about six inches down was a fabulous Edward 3rd groat...it was a truly magnificent find and one I will never forget.....and from then on I was convinced that I had gotten into a truly BRILLIANT hobby,
Thanks for looking........and good hunting..👍

It's always a special day when we find that first hammered coin but for some a bit more special.
I had to wait five years before I found my first one. I think my first reaction was one of surprise followed by a certain amount of satisfaction that my research was right and had finally paid off. The face was scrubbed and rubbed but To me, the most beautiful Elizabeth 1st 3 pence.
Amazing the difference a plough makes. A week I'll never forget. Lizzy 3pence, two days later a Mary 1st groat, (extra special because they were only struck for one year) followed 4 days later by a Vicky gold 1/2 sovereign.
Just proves that patience and perseverance pay off.

Andre, in answer to your questions, I wanted to go detecting years ago but continually put it off due to work, family and the problem of having nowhere to go! Eventually the kids went to uni and I took early retirement and moved to north Wales. I still had nowhere to go detecting but in the end I bought a detector anyway and then joined a club. I now go to their rallies and as many others as I can find. I do have one small local permission but ideally I need to find more. My detector is a Garrett AT Pro.

What was your first coin?

Trefor,a modern rusty 2p,lol,and then a green  disc of nothing it was that corroded.my son is only seven so it's a long way till uni😀I have a good permission, thousands of acres, farmer mate of mine, but I don't have the experience or the machinery because I'm on a budget. But I thoroughly enjoy my days on the farm, stress reliever from work and family life👍

Roman on beach,is it common?

Andre
I suppose it depends where you live, I used to do a lot of metal detecting on the east coast, from the Humber, North, and used to find Roman coins on the beaches though not that common, a lot of it is to do with the way the sea is eroding the land away and washing what were fields in to the sea.

By far and the best place I used to go was on the River Humber estuary at 2 places North and South Ferriby, depending on how bad the weather had been and how high and fast the river had been, lots of land is being eroded away here all the time, there was a big roman settlement at South Ferriby and a roman crossing to North Ferriby. it was always hit and miss depending on the factors I mentioned above, sometimes you could come away with a small handful of Roman coins or come away with nothing, always of course being wary of the tides and mud banks along there.
