Title: Tokens with squares help!
Post by: spaceonwhite on October 20, 2016, 04:09:08 PM
Only my 4th time out metal detecting, so quite the beginner!

Found these two coin/token type objects with square centres in close proximity of each other. One is really thin an brittle which is why it's unfortunately damaged whilst the other is much thicker.

Research on the web hasn't got me anywhere so wondering if anyone has any ideas?

Cheers

Jeff

Jeff

They are chinese coins from what I can tell. How you would date them though I don't know. They do look to have some age to them though. Google chinese coins to see similar.

Thanks Mark.

Don't know what they are doing in the middle of a farmers field in Cardiff!

It never ceases to amaze me the things that we find doing our hobby :).
What are they made of ?? From my little knowledge of them the brass ones are quite common but the cast iron type are rarer, bone and silver rarer still. All of the coins except the bone ones are cast unlike ours which were struck. This type of coin can date back 2000 years.

I've managed to ID the coin that wasn't split as a Qing (Ch'ing) Dynasty coin 1736 to 1795. These Chinese lucky coins were often held as charms on a string. As I found both close by, there's a good chance there's more to find so looking forward to see if I can find anymore when I go back out  ;D Strange finds for a farmers field!

These coins are usually referred to as CHINESE CASH coins. They would have been brought back to this country by trader back in the middle to late 18th century. That is what I learned about them back in the 1970's when many were found. ATB Tony
