Title: Metal detecting near a Cadw Scheduled Monument
Post by: spaceonwhite on October 06, 2016, 07:48:55 PM
Hi guys,

I've just secured a permission on a farm which contains a Cadw scheduled monument. I'm trying to find out the boundaries of the schedule monument to ensure I don't infringe on it but I can't find anywhere online that details boundaries. Does anyone have any advice on how I could find out?

Thanks

Jeff

I've got a field that I detect in with a scheduled monument - there were several ways I could have found out the area that was actually scheduled - the farmer usually knows, or you could ask someone at the museum too.

I still tend to stay well away from the scheduled area - better be safe than sorry, mind you on another farm the farmer won't even let me in the same field (or surrounding fields) as a scheduled monument.

i was stopped once on my permission by the CADW police , yes they do have them , they told me to stay at least 50 yards from the monument that was on my permission

I too have had a permission on a schedule monument,i was taken to the area by the landowner and shown where I could/couldn't detect, and told quite categorically, and in no uncertain terms that if I did trespass into the no go areas he would make sure that I would not get any more permissions in the area....well I knew where I stood, and that's what it's all about isn't it ?...good hunting..👍

if you go to Coflein mapping you can zoom in on the area your interested in and using the tools on the left hand side you can draw a square around the area and this will show you the sites in that area. choose the site your interested in and then read the description of that site it usually tells you if the site is scheduled. I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I've also spoken to cadw who gave me the following information:

The location and extent of Scheduled Monuments are displayed on the Cadw website and I have provided a link to this below.

http://cadw.gov.wales/historicenvironment/recordsv1/cof-cymru/?skip=1&lang=en (http://cadw.gov.wales/historicenvironment/recordsv1/cof-cymru/?skip=1&lang=en)

If you zoom into the area that you are interested in and click onto the Scheduled Monument depiction, you will be able to view and export information and mapping.

Huge improvement on the original site. Slightly annoying as they have some blue spots (listed buildings) and no info on them.
Well worth keeping.

Thank you very much for providing the link Jeff. There are many more scheduled monuments in my area than I would have thought, also a protected wreck close to shore so thanks again.
