Title: My best ever hammered coin Post by: The Doc on August 25, 2016, 09:29:51 PM I was out in the wonderful Vale of Glamorgan last week when I was stunned to turn this up completely out of the blue.
As many will know, Anglo-Saxon coins are very rare finds in Wales. I think I have seen two in the 14 years I have been detecting, and this is my first ever coin from this era. The coin is an Aethelred II small cross penny and dates AD 978-79. The obverse inscription reads + ÆÐELRED REX ANGL.ER, which is unusual and possibly not previously recorded. The reverse reads + ÆÐELVEARD MONA, so the moneyer is definitely Æthelweard, although it is not yet clear what mint this was struck at. Museum experts are trying to work out for definite whether the coin's unusual features make it unique. I had to keep pinching myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming, but it still seems to be there and I think I'm awake... Rod Blunt from UKDFD and Martin Allen from the Fitzwilliam Museum have been very helpful in classifying the coin. The view is that it could be Southampton mint, where there was a moneyer Æthelweard working at this time, but looks like it may never be certain.
