Title: Crop Mark
Post by: celticspikey on July 22, 2016, 08:03:39 AM
I was looking at aerial maps last night of surrounding fields in one of my favorite areas and came across these interesting marks, it is only when I look at 1945 black and white photo of the field that these crop marks stand out.....now ordinarily I would say roman?? but could it be army related from end of the war. Any thoughts guys.. :-\ ;) ;)

Hi Paul. I think you could probably rely on it being Roman.
The black & white early aerial pics on Google were ordered by the Government in  (I think) 1947 just after the War finished as a way to assess the areas that needed the most urgent re-building programs and the extent of damage.
As there don't appear to be any hard roads or run-ways going into or out of the picture I'd rule out modern military.
If you haven't already explored the site my thought would be, GET IN THERE.

PS do the Archies know about it ?

Only way to really know for sure is to get permission and get detecting over it. looks exciting enough to me  ;) what maps do you use as I could try them in my area?
cheers, Keith. :)

Romana, GoogleEarth, click on clock in tool bar, little bar comes up with a slide on it. Just slide it left and you'll get any earlier aerial pics available for the area your looking at.

Hi Paul, judging by the pictures the way that all the outlines a re rectangular I would go 100% ROMAN...also,if it was a ROMAN settlement, there is a very good chance that the area was occupied prior to the Romans building there.
Great bit of research by the way.......and may good fortune follow your tenacity 👍

Thanks for your thoughts, Val Im pretty sure it's Roman, it's not far from a field system that goes back to Bronze Age, with ocsaional Iron Age and a good splattering of Roman. The army was here but weren't they every ware I suppose.... ;) romana I've no need to seek permission as I've had it for years thankfully although up untill now I have only passed by this area, rest assure it will have a full investigation when crops are off. Mike you are always willing to help, as usual.  ;) incidentally the measurements are as follows.

Big square approx 30x 30 Mtrs.
Rectangular on top 16x10 Mtrs.
Right hand Side piece 17 Mtrs.

So big area, no Archie's yet, investigation first and see farmer , not listed / scheduled....spikey.  ;)
