welcome aboard Mike

Pinpointers, don't buy cheap. Save up and get the garrett propointer....... you can sometimes negotiate a good package price of a garrett 250 and propointer from a reputable dealer. Some give 10% discount if you tell them you are a member of DW.

look up the youtube videos of the garrett 250 .... or other detectors that take your fancy... do the research first, and see if u can get out with someone and borrow a spare detector first.

don't forget other essential things such as insurance and headphones,as well.

cheers

Hi Terra Firma,Firstly, a very warm welcome to the  Detecting Wales forum.
It's a really great forum and has a very large number of knowledgeable people who are always on hand any questions you may want answers to.
With regards to detectors, yes, the Garrett ace 150 is a great machine with which to start, but may I suggest that the Garrett ace 250 is a  a better machine, and in fact that's the machine that got me hooked on Detecting,a very capable and underestimated machine,I had some very good results when I started out with mine, even found some hammered coins !!
And,they are virtually the same price
Some times it's well worth getting  in touch with Staffordshire metal detectors, speak with Kevin, (owner).  I have bought several used metal detectors off him in the past and he has always seen me right, good prices, and good warranty.
With regards to a pin-pointer, as previously stated, not really a cheap option,I always go for good Garrett PRO-POINTER (other makes available).... LOL!!
I hope this helps,Good hunting !!....👍
