Title: My First find - stumped Post by: valleyboy on February 05, 2016, 06:25:32 PM Only had about an hour on a Roman site that had previously been dug by archeologists, found this in the soil site they left behind, first glance I thought part of scissors but there is no hole for another piece to join, don't think its Roman but wondering if its an old nail or something along those lines.

Only difference between them is mine are galvanised ;D Wouldn't a gate hinge be rounded though Val, this is a flat piece of square bar, would have thought a gate hinge would round off with the opening and closing on a gate or is the pin stationary? Title: Re: My First find - stumped Post by: Chef Geoff on February 06, 2016, 08:58:25 AM Square is good, the years will have corroded a lot off the original length but the shape is the same and the square piece would have either been set in to a stone wall (with lead) or hammered into a wooden beam (door frame) and worked in a reverse way to the one below so the door hung in it rather than on it ;)

I think these will show you more clearly what Geoff was saying. There are actually 2 fittings, you could call them Male and Female (I'll leave you to figure out which is which) ;)
Modern ones are adjustable. The bolts just screw in to lift the gate, handy in this weather because the posts, even brick ones tend to move when the ground gets wet. |
