Nice detail - what are you using for your moulding material?

Delft clay

That would explain the good detail! Do you use it like plaster of paris, letting it set?

No its like sand with an oil added to it you just compress it in casting rings press the object half way in the material then add the top ring compress take apart remove item put back together then your good to go.

Ahhh . . . I've not come across that, but I do know of oil bonded sand (Petrobond) and the yanks use a home brew called K-bond which uses ingredients I can't get over here (bentonate) Cousin is an industrial chemist and he can't get me any either.

I do my own castings but I use traditional green sand, made with fine silver sand and bentonite clay. I don't need that level of detail, but I've seen oil-bonded sand castings which retain all the details on a coin (as an example . . .  ;))

Very nice.

I intend to do something like that when I've finally cleared up the garage, got a decent workbench in there, and something to melt silver in too.

I made a few moulds some time back using cuttlefish bones, and even a couple using plaster of paris I made by grinding and heating alabaster you can pick up on Penarth beach.
