Title: seal matrix ID please
Post by: Hound dog on October 15, 2015, 06:12:01 PM
Hello, I found this seal matrix last weekend near Stamford Lincs. I've tried to id it with no luck. The shield resembles the St Georges cross, and the standing figure over a kneeling figure appears in some medieval saint depictions. Any help with an id appreciated. Also, I haven't cleaned it properly or made an impression, as I'm worried that I will damage it, so any tips on cleaning and conservation eg. olive oil/wax appreciated. Many thanks, Ray

Nice seal Ray, put some talc on it and then take an imprint with blue-tac. Bring it with you Sunday.

A cracking find Ray and in lovely condition I still can't quite make out the writing but i'll keep playing ;)
This link shows one of the same overall design though I think yours has the baby Jesus represented as the lamb of God the shield also has a different crest but this could show that the design was popular but adaptable :-\

Thanks everyone. Chef Geoff I think the standing figure is holding a globe with lamb of God and cross, maybe agnus dei. Could it be John the Baptist? Thanks again everyone.  Ray

I think the cross is just the banner that the Lamb of God carries, Agnus Dei is just the Lamb of God in Latin so yes, John the Baptist wouldn't really make sense as he didn't meet Jesus until Jesus was an adult :-\ My take would be that the seal belonged to a member of the clergy, as many did, and the kneeling figure is a representation of the owner recieving ordination ;)

Thanks everyone,  thanks for all the info Chef. Any joy with the writing? Should I clean it further or coat it in oil or wax or leave it be?

Well if that is soil in the recesses then you could use a wooden cocktail stick or soft bristle brush or even try soaking it in distilled water for a week to soften it. Definitely not oil and looking at the condition if kept away from moisture it should be fine as it is.

Great find. I agree with Geoff about it belonging to a member of the clergy.

It reads something like S' ERIS IOhIS DE DATONIA.

I'm not sure about the first few letters, but the 'IOhIS DE' is pretty clear. The last word could also be NATONIA.

'IOhIS DE' means 'John of'. Does Natonia or Datonia make any sense?
