Many years ago I had to give up some very productive fields because the farmer went in to the Entry Level or Higher level Stewardship Scheme, I cant quite remember which one, any way he said he signed up for 10 years and he was told detecting was banned ? this I took as gospel at the time and let it be. My question is... 1 Can you detect on the land under these schemes now. (Or was he misinformed at the time any way) 2 Does any one else detect on similar land restrictions ? 3 Before approaching the farmer again do I need to get written consent from any one first as I'm sure if I had something in writing it would persuade the farmer possibly, although this may be the wrong way round I know. 1. yes detecting on land under either scheme is permitted though not on grassland under ELS and all land under HLS with a recorded archaeological site (not scheduled just recorded on the HER) Plus ALL finds must be recorded from land under HLS. 2. Yes two of my farms are under HLS and though an obvious Roman farmstead on both nothing is on the local HER. 3. if you the farmer has land with an archaeological site recorded that you wish to detect then you need written permission from Natural England, the farmer will know what's there as he will have a "Farm Environment Plan". I have one where 4 large fields were regraded in this fashion and the farmer was unaware. After negotiation with NE and finding out why they were re-categorised, I manged to keep the farmers permission. Having said that I think that when the farm changes hands and I retire from the hobby they will become a no detecting area. One thing for sure dont just accept NO talk to NE. ;) :) Jerry.
