Take no notice of Nobby or Mark let me have them, I will endeavour to find the legal owners, and if not I will really look after them ...until the Gold prices go way up and if I fall on really hard times I will sell them and spend the money very wisely  ;).......

Have a look at the conditions stipulated with your Crown Permit for beach detecting.  ;)

I find it quite worrying why no one has given you a straight answer on this ??? If they don't know then they really shouldn't be allowed to use a detector lol but I think it's more a fear of sounding hypocritical as most of us know what you "should" do but few do it, and I included myself in that, so by the law of the land if you find valuables, in this case a ring, you have to take reasonable steps to find the owner which is satisfied by handing it in to the lost property dept at a police station, I will say I have done this on several occasions especially years ago when I was beach detecting and on every occasion I received the ring back as unclaimed however most police forces no longer deal with lost property and so it's difficult, if not impossible, to know what satisfies the "take reasonable steps to find the owner" part of the law :-\ Some councils now have a lost property section but I think that a post regarding finding a ring on a certain beach at a certain time on Facebook would have more chance and possibly satisfy that clause, one other clause is "to permanently deprive" so if you find a one off personalised gold ring and go straight to a jewellers and sell it after which the rightful owner sees it then you would be done for "Theft by finding".
 ;)

Just to comment on Resurgam's post about T&C of the Crown Estates permit, it's worth having a read and is quite an eye opener as in reality it only applies to the wet sand ie between mean high water and mean low water so when your detecting that lovely dry stuff at the top of the beach you could be breaking the law by not having permission :-\

I could be mistaken, but I thought that I read ..... all valuables found remain the property of the Crown Estates. Or have I misread it?  :-[

Post by: Chef Geoff on September 28, 2015, 04:19:21 PM
No you haven't misread it Chris but that's quite normal and exactly the same as permission on farmland all items found belong to the land owner just because you found them doesn't give you title over them and that's why you should always show the landowner/farmer the finds otherwise it's theft unless they have told you they don't want to see the finds. Crown Estates do state they will split any valuable finds 50/50 so once again quite normal ;)

Its quite worrying the number of detectorists that find all these valuable rings along beaches and dont think what grief it may have brought to the person who has lost them. I agree with chef geoff anything of value found on a beach should be handed in and only when all avenues have been tried to locate the owner have failed, the item is usually handed back.

You read all the time on  forums of rings being found and howmuch money they make when sold. ::)

I had first hand experience of the distress it causes when a ring is lost.  The poor lady in question was so upset she couldn't stop sobbing.
I was asked for help and did what I could but at that time I hadn't been detecting long and had just bought my first decent machine.  Needless to say I didn't find it.  I phoned a couple who detect locally to ask for help and was promised they and anyone else they could recruit would meet me the next morning.  They didn't show up.
I'm almost sure the ring was found the following year by a detectorist. It was valued at £7,500. Apart from the fact it was an Engagement ring no wonder she was so upset.

I don't know what happened to it after the valuation.

I have spoken with a couple of detectorists who said that it was a case of finders keepers. Not my policy, I must add.

"Finders Keepers" is a primary school playground law and that's where it belongs as do those who live by it ;)

interesting post , as to handing in found rings / jewellary etc to the police or council thats a fair shout , however there are countless rings/ jewellary lost on beaches , if a person contacts lost property asking " has a ring been handed in "  , yes actually lots says the person behind the counter yellow coloured metal ring , silver coloured ring blah blah , now if the said ring/s are plain ordinary rings how is the guy behind the counter or the claiment going to know which ring is who's , oh it fits it must be mine , oh its gold thats mine etc etc , umm no , theres no proof who lost what / who owns what , so as has been said previously unless its got your name inscribed on the ring / jewellary you have a 99.99% chance of getting it back in the future .

its  always sad ( unless the person has lobbed the item into the sea on purpose lol ) when a ring or jewellary is lost but unfortunately its almost impossible to track down the owner of " ordinary items "

Last year, whilst detecting on Rhyl beach, a young woman with a child approached me and asked if I had found a ladies ring. Ah ha, says I, "how many stones are set in the ring"? I hadn't found a ring nor had she lost one. Just a big try-on!  ;)

At the end of the day, its more a question of doing the right thing and hopefully portraying oneself as a responsible detectorist. Most valuable rings that are lost in most cases would have been reported locally and would remain on record. ::)

The Liverpool comedian Paul O'Grady, who has a BBC radio show on Sunday evenings, has a lost and found spot on his show. A quick email to his internet site will get an announcement of the thing that was lost or found, on the Sunday evening show.

Tried it once and had announced the finding of a gold signet ring but no claimants came forward.

If I ever found a Roman or another Tudor ring , I would gladly place an advert along with my address and Phone number in the local paper and in the nearest newsagents window, asking if the Roman or Tudor person who lost it would like to claim it.
