Welcome to Detecting Wales Dave and may your finds be many.

I would have recommended Staffs Metal detectors, Kevin is a great Guy to deal with and he usually has a good selection of 2nd hand detectors,  but I don't think he's got anything suitable at the present. Given where you live I guess the beach wont be your usual hunting ground so have a look at the link below to Leisure Promotions.  They've got a Garrett Ace 250 for £179  free post.  Great first machine and will find you some nice stuff (if it's there).
I don't know of a Club in that area but I'm sure one or two who live around there would meet up with you if you asked.

Welcome to the forum Dave ;)
As Val has said Staffs is the place to look, at the moment they have a couple in your budget
http://staffsmetaldetectorsonlineshop.co.uk/compass-gold-scanner-pro-897-p.asp (http://staffsmetaldetectorsonlineshop.co.uk/compass-gold-scanner-pro-897-p.asp)
(Older machine but it's the one that found me more than any other with 76 hammies in a year)

(can be a bit sparky around iron but a nice machine to use)

(above's little brother)

(A very capable machine)

As for clubs I think your nearest is going to be Hereford, a bit of a trek but a very good club and it would be worth it once a month, I'm sure Deadlock (chairman) will be along soon ;)

Hi ya Dave, and welcome to the Detecting Wales forum,it truly is a great forum with some great characters within !
Also there is a wealth of informative information available, all you've got to do is ask,and someone out there will be able to help.
With regard to a "start up" metal detector from my own experience  the Garrett  ACE 250 is a very good machine, and in actual fact  I preferred it to its bigger brother the EURO ACE,but obviously it's all down to how much  you want to spend.
But don't get a detector that is complicated, it will possibly confuse you and put you off what is a fantastic hobby.
Well Dave,I hope you soon get a detector sorted out and get out detecting, and I hope you find all in which you go searching for .👍

Hi mate you are looking for a detector ?I would go for something that would last you a while with a good resale value if you don't like the hobby .I started with the garrett 250 which is a good starter machine but you will try to move on .You could have this machine

.But will have to read how to setup  on YouTube etc. Plus I bet someone on here has one of these machines as well to help . Use the 15 ponds left to get headphones ,mogsy
