Title: Celtic cross?
Post by: wittsy1 on July 23, 2015, 05:24:58 AM
Had a couple of hours yesterday and my very first signal produced this cross. I think it is a Celtic Cross. Can anyone one help with possible age.

How big is it and what's on the back  ??

It's definitely a representation of a Celtic cross but I think it's a fairly modern one. The decoration isn't celtic and the circle is a bit on the large side.

It is a symbol that is still in use, even today and is still used as religious style jewellery.

By anyones standard (especially mine) it's a lovely find but I'd say modern-ish.  Interestingly there are 4 Fleurs de lis at each intersection of the arms.  Wonder if that's saying something.

Like I put on Rob Two Spades post, I wish they wouldn't keep making these repros.  they built you up to let you down. Think I'd have fallen over with shock if I'd found your cross or his annular brooch.

As Val says the fleurs de lis  are unusual and very un Irish :-\ I'm not sure what is going on with the bottom but looks as if it has a break of some sort ??? given its small size could it be a book clasp/strap end ???

There would have been a French influence around West Wales during Henry's time. Wonder if it could be that old  :-\

Some thought provoking answers there, cheers chaps. Just gave it a very light clean with a bit of warm soapy water and soft tooth brush which is revealing Gold gilding, how far back in time was this process carried out.

I know the Egyptians did it so I should think we did.  They forged gold coins, isn't that the same.

We have found 4 pieces of post reformation 16century jewellery two rings ,and two pendants ....all in silver but three had hidden wounds of Christ on them ...away from prying eyes these Catholics were hanging onto their faith...That's why think your cross done in Celtic Cross came from somewhere in Europe ..There is traces of guilding on it,...
