Title: Talacre Silver today
Post by: Resurgam on July 18, 2015, 07:50:06 PM
I was planning to detect Talacre tomorrow, but heard that the weather man was predicting rain so I decided to give it a go today. Initially I couldn't make up my mind as to which machine to use; the Safari, or the CS4PI. I eventually decided on the Safari and made an early start . Arriving two hours before low tide, I chased the tide out and had it chase me back again.

Fantastic bit of sunshine all day and not too many holiday makers  on the sands. I managed 4 X 10p decimal, 1 X 5p decimal, 1 X 1p decimal,
and a 1950 shilling. Staying away fro the bullet beds; I didn't dig too many projectiles, or shrapnel. Toward the end of the session I unearthed half of a cigarette case and just chucked it in my scrap bag with the rest of the junk that I had recovered

When I got back to the caravan and inspected my finds a little closer, some of the crud had peeled off the cigarette case to reveal a paler grey metal. A quick spitting session, and it took a whole lot o' spit to cover the darned thing.....................wrapped in foil and gently rubbed, the case became so hot I couldn't keep hold of it and the whole caravan stunk of bad eggs!  :o  I can't see any hall marks but perhaps once cleaned up I may find some.

Could you make out the details on the map? Based on my projectile finds on the seaward side of the dunes, I suspect that the location shown for the air to ground targets may not be totally accurate. The book "Wings Across The Border vol 3 by Derric Pratt & Mike Grant cover the area of North East Wales quite well. I have never come across any land-mines, so the MoD must have done a very good job of clearing the mines in 1945.

"Shipwrecks Of North Wales" by Ivor Wynne Jones is an other good book for information on the area. There is said to be a Roman wreck in Dee Estuary. For a bit of interest...........google  "The Noneparile and the Trevor"  two packet ships lost on the West Hoyle Bank. When I get back to base next week, I will email you some more information. I reckon that we are detecting amongst ghosts!  ;)

I have had better! ;D Strange things going on at the moment though! Since upgrading to the Minelab Safari, I have been finding silver or gold plated silver at Talacr. Not a lot!!!

I half wondered if the cigarette case may have belonged to one of the pilots who were torn apart by the anti-invasion posts, along with their air crafts. Had I realised that it was silver when I dug it up, I would have worked that area with a lot more intensity. I can't see any engraving or hall marks on the case yet.

Very nicely done Chris.  I told you the Safari just loves silver.  Maybe you've got the back of the case and the hall marks would have been on the lid.  You'll have to get back and have another go.

The weather forecast has changed for tomorrow. They say it's going to be clear after about 7am and Sunny with light winds for the rest of the day. Of course this is Wales, it could change again if you wait around for an hour or two. ::)

Good morning Val,
well it looks like you were right then, but I can't imagine why it is so. There must be a reason for it's ability to sniff out silver. Now for those hammies!  ;D

I almost passed over the cigarette case. I was idly sweeping along with a gentle buzz in my ears when an almighty rasp sang out and the machine indicated overload. All my other overload signals at Talacre had been very large lumps of rusting iron or aluminium. After hesitating for a moment, I decided to have a peep at the object. Surfacing from a bout eight inched below the sand, it had a light coating of a material that looked rather like rust.

I think that I am going to have to be a lot more observant about my targets that I recover; it could have finished up in the council scrap bin. I am almost always using the cross saved program on the Safari for my beach detecting now. It took a little getting used to the upside down signals...............high note bad...low note good or better! I still refer to the indicator though.  :)

Hi Richie,
we are not due home till Monday night and I was thinking of having a look for the other half, but with two square  miles of sand to go at it will be like looking for a needle in a haystack.  ::)

Hi Wittsy,
I don't know about the sweet smell of silver; I'm lucky that the wife has no sense of smell, otherwise she would have chucked both me and the case out of the caravan.  ::)

Being more diligent with signals also Chris.  Something I noticed yesterday with the Deus.  Been trying a different program with minor tweak's.   This one has 'full tones'  all 4 of them  ::)   The signal I got was mixed, grunty iron but with a squeak. Think I dug it out of desperation with a twinge of curiosity.  Was really surprised to see the first object (buckle) in the hole, it being brass, so had another swing over it.  A nice, low grunty iron sound.
So there be the lesson,  listen more attentively and dig just in case. Made me wonder how many others I hadn't dug. :o

All good advice Val; thank you. I'm going to give it an other try tomorrow and chase the tide out to low water and then retreat as the tide turns and chases me back up the beach.
I know of one silver hammy that was recovered from the sands here at Talacre; perhaps with my good friend the Safari and it's penchant for finding silver, my luck will be in!  ;D

PS........I still can't find a hall mark on the item. It looks as though it is the back half of the cigarette case, but I imagine that both halves should be hall marked if they are truly silver. :-\

Not necessarily Chris. I think it depends on age and maker.  It could have been American, it might make a difference Anyway egg smell is egg smell and you can't change that.

Best of luck tomorrow.

Gave it a second go this morning and nabbed seven coins and of all things.........a completes cigarette case that looks to be in worse condition than the half case that I found on Saturday.
Will post some pics later in the week once we get home and I can do a little cleaning of my weekend's finds.

Here ya go folks,
ok, the items don't constitute a king's ransom but  more clues in the Talacre jigsaw puzzle. The cartridge case is rather unusual for Talacre; it appears to have been made of overlapping layers of thin copper
with a brass head but no date or calibre stamped on the head. I suspect that the markings on the rim of the percussion cap may be the war department arrow?

I did, of course, dig a whole load of WWII scrap that was disguising it's self as good targets and fooled both the Safari and my self!  ::)

Strange cartridge case Chris looks like a lot of the info off the base as worn away over the years. Well done on the finds my friend  :).

Hi Richie,
the nearest guess at present is a 1870s .450/577 Martin Henry Round but the jury is still out on that one. I'm waiting for "RRPG" to get back to me. Of course I got plenty of WWII scrap at the same time. I'm hoping to get back onto the same area this coming Sunday to see If I can get a cigarette lighter to go with those two cigarette cases!  ;D

I'm going to try and improve my discipline and stick to three smallish areas this coming Sunday; rather than meandering all over the place.  ;)

Ah ha, the BBC weather man says it's going to be fine and dry all day on Saturday; unless he has changed his mind since I last looked.

A year or two ago, I was down on the beach chatting to a detectorist when the weather started to look very threatening. Not having my detector with me and being dressed only in my summer togs; I made my apologies and started to leave at the first sign of a few raindrops. Before I reached the dunes, the heavens started to open and it commenced a downpour. I reached the shelter of some trees too late and was soaked to the skin!

Strangely, when I arrived at our caravan looking rather like a drowned rat, my wife thought that it was rather funny.  :o

We had  ONE  heavy shower this morning and,  yes you guessed,   I was out in it with the dogs.   Got home and had to rub the dogs down and hang my fleece on the line.

Not sure exactly where you will be Chris but the Forecast for Aberystwyth is still fine all day Sat. with light winds.  Happy hunting.

BBC weather man and bloody Welsh pantomime weather............It's going to be fine all day Saturday, oh no it isn't, oh yes it is. It's going to be wet for several hours in the morning, oh no it isn't, oh yes it is!

Being back at the van for a few days, I have manage to get a wife permit to go with my beach permit and intend revisiting the area where a few bits of silver have turned up since upgrading to the Safari. Keeping a close eye on the weather predictions for the week end I have changed my plans several times. Just had a quick peep at the BBC forecast and they say tomorrow will be fine all day.

Well; I is going out first thing in the morning, come hell or rainwater! Let's see what Talacre will release from the sands tomorrow.  ;)

I can never understand how the BBC and the Met.Office sites differ so much.  I thought they used Met.Office data but they don't even agree on tide times.
AND  have you noticed there's often a difference in forecasts between BBC2  and BBC1.

But whatever they say it's always something different anyway.

I'm an AOL user (for my sins) and their weather forecasts are always a full 180 degrees away from what actually happens.

They forecast the kind of snow that would bring Siberia to a standstill in February, apocalyptic rainstorms a bit later and baking heat for July.

They even make the Met Office look good  :o

Well, it looks like the BBC got it right to-day and Mr Sunshine smiled upon me all morning, but not so Lady Luck! I tried to listen diligently to what the Safari was singing in all metals, cross saved from conductive, sensitivity on manual at 20, and the coil hugging the sand as I slowly swung it from side to side for six hours.

The best I could manage was £1.0 decimal, 20p decimal, 5p decimal, and a very small brass button. I did of course get some projectiles and copper shrapnel. Ignoring the numbers indicated and listening to the low grunt of the audio, I tended to turn up 5p sized pieces of copper shrapnel and slowly began to imagine the same machine responses on pasture and realised that it was probably time for me to give Talacre a rest and get back onto pasture to see how the Safari performs now that I have gotten used to it a wee bit.

Talacre is finally doin me ed in!  ::)

You can't say you didn't try Chris.  6 hours OMG  and I'm depressed.  I've said it before and I'll say it again (on record) I'm never going to those fields again.  No matter how much I try and convince myself there's something there I just can't find it.

3 and a bit hours day before yesterday and I came home with ONE piece of lead. Think I can say they've done me 'ed in.

Talking of £1 coins.  Have you noticed that some of the newer 'smart' parking machines spit the beach finds out. I reckon it's because they loose weight from being rolled around the beach.  Don't seem to have the same problem with field finds.

Well Chris, I must admit that I had far more success on Tera Firma than I ever did on" de playa de arena."
I found that the SAFARI was far more responsive and accurate on pastures.
The SAFARI is a great machine, but for me a bit too complicated and too b****y heavy,so much so it started to detract from my original idea of having enjoyment, but that's just me.
Very good luck for the future pasture detecting.👍

That was my first thought Chris...............Val has been trying to use dud coins in the parking meters. Sometimes a bit of spit rubbed on the coin and the machine will accept it. As for Talacre, I think I will put it on the back burner for a while and try elsewhere.

Interestingly, I moved back onto an area that I had searched earlier this morning and the Safari started playing up. I first thought that the machine was getting tired; I knew that I was! I then realised that I hadn't presses the noise cancel button as I changed back to the area.  ::)

Val, as I understand it, there are millions of counterfeit £1 coins in circulation. Even discounting coins found whilst detecting, we often find that slot machines kick coins out again. If all pound coins were checked before being accepted the countries shops would come to a standstill. I once worked for a major chemical company and became involved in producing some schematics for training purposes but the drawing office wouldn't let us do the work because we were not trained or qualified, so an outside team of artistic young people were brought in. Under our direction they completed the job as required and then moved on. The last I heard, they were arrested for counterfeiting paper money to be passed off in change machines at seaside arcades!  ::)

Never thought of that Chris! I once had the same problem with my EuroAce and with frequently changing coils I had got a little bit of "grit" in the socket. I will double check the connection today. I will also put a bit of rubbing stuff on me back and fine tune me braces!  ;).

The other thing to remember Chris is the sand getting between the coil cover and the coil. It's amazing how much gets in.

I seem to remember Geoff talking about it ages ago. He explained how the crystalline structure of the sand interfered with the signals from the coil.

Thanks for the heads up on that one Val. I have even been thinking of filling the gap between the coil and the cover with none adhesive silicon gel so as to stop the sand getting in..
