Title: A puzzler - badge?
Post by: Smoo on June 28, 2015, 03:37:42 PM
Hi all,

Another find that has got me scratching my head (I have to be careful I don't get splinters), found this shield shape badge with three loops on the reverse. It looks to me and my detecting buddy like the old school prefect badges (size and shape are right) but the three loops? I've put a lined drawing with what details I can make out to try and aid with identifying what it was. The condition is poor but some detail can be made out, hope someone has seen one similar before.
Thanks
Smoo

Hi Smoo, I've had a look around but can't find one exactly the same as yours.  I'd say it could be a makers badge which would have been attached to part of a horse harness/bridle/saddle.  Nice find.

Thank Val,

I have seen examples of these shield shaped metal pieces that were used on horse leatherwork, though it tended to be form the medieval period. There is a PAS day in Chester on 1st August that I planned to take a couple of pieces to, I think a may take this one too.
Thanks again
Smoo
