Hammered penny size Geoff,  ;) would it be Saxon or Saxon period?

Well if it's Carolingian then yes Saxon period, think of Charlemagne 8th-9th century he's about the only person to have kicked seven sorts of um? "night soil" out of the Saxons ;)

Nice find.

I too haven't found it yet (but I am at work....) - it could do with a wash under a tap - is it possible to say in mm how big it is - I know you said penny size, but that did change :)

Hi Roland, will put better pictures up tonight and measurements ;) its a mate who found it on my site I know hes washed it now so should look better. Here you go any good Roland ? I haven't got measurements yet though, I would guess around 14 mm. I know its not Ideal mate. Certainly bigger than a sceat. ;)

I'm afraid to say I have to throw in the towel on this one the style still points to it being 8th-9th century but the wider you cast your net the more you realise how similar coins were all across western Europe at that time, I feel that the "SC" represents the Latin for holy or Saint "Sanctus" but it doesn't make sense it being on both sides especially as they aren't identical  ???
So I think it's one for an expert on coins from that period but it's certainly one to record as there is always the chance that it's one of those coins that were always marked in the Seaby's coin book as "unique" ;)

I'm struggling on this one as well. Haven't given up yet but not feeling very hopeful.

Thanks for your effort Geoff, and Doc, I saw a dealer from Malmsbury today a friend of mine, he has sent an e/ mail of coin to a chap in France who deals in this period. Let you know how it goes  ;)

I can't find anything at the moment either!

It reminds me a bit of the porcupine sceats, with the 'TOTII' reverse in a box - taken from late roman 'VOT V' types

I also thought of the 'SCI PE' coins, but that's not it.

I even thought of some of the inscribed celtic units, I'm sure there is one with ESCO or similar on it, but the design on this coin is just wrong for a celtic coin - it's just so - for want of a better description ' dark ages / early medieval'.

My final thought was maybe it was a 'fantasy' - I know that there are a number of people who make hammered and other coins and scatter them as they are interested in the retrieval rates for these things - and some of these get found 10 or 20 years later - but the quality of the silver (i.e it looks a bit brittle) suggests that it really has been in the ground for a long time.

Cheers Roland, it's baffling the coin expert at the fitzwarren museum, he's asking a couple more experts.

[/quoteThanks For the comment David, we've had 2 dealers looking already, and the Fitzwilliam  coin specialist who was a bit stumped and he is now showing it to 2 more coin experts, however I have received an e/mail from Peter Spencer at the Searcher coin ID and will post soon.

Well guys here is the latest view from Peter Spencer on coin ID in the searcher.

I'd say late Merovingian or early Carolingian. New varieties turn up fairly regularly and this could be yet another.

Regards,

Peter.

Well done Geoff looks like you were on the money ;) talking of money I have asked Peter if he has any Idea of the value :-\ given it may be a new variety? as we need to make it fair with the landowner... he is a really nice bloke and I have an agreement with him ;)

I would of thought that the big money would be paid on the continent as more collectors of that period (after recording of course) ;)
