Title: Axe Heads
Post by: 150aceboy on May 20, 2015, 08:35:38 PM
Out recently with my good friend and fellow D.W. Member ( sarnpoet ).

It was a normal evening, sun still beating down, when i recieved a txt saying " do you fancy an hour out mate ", well like most of us, the answer was yes pick me up  ;D.

Ten minutes later, the van pulled up outside the house, threw our detectors and spades in the back and we were off.

Where we going i said, the answer was i dont know, so we decided to go to my local pasture permission, at least the grass was nice and short and had just been chain harrowed a few days previous.

First ten minutes were quiet, a button, lead, etc, when i heard my mate shout me over.

As i got closer to where my mate was standing, i noticed a huge smile from ear to ear ;D, "think i've found something good bro", out of his finds bag he produced a lovely looking small axe  :o, i could'nt believe it, when in his other hand he passed  me another axe  :o, woohoo.

We did not actually now what they were at that time, so we phoned another friend of ours, who is well up on things like this. " sounds like you've found a hoard of bronze age axes "  ???

By the following day, our mate had sent pictures to an archaeologist, who confirmed it was a hoard and that the finds were Bronze Age Flat Axes, circa 2000 bc , and that they would come under the treasure act.

A meeting was sorted, all the forms filled in etc, and the axes have now been passed onto the museum etc, and coroner informed.

Have got to say they are in lovely condition, and still very sharp, the only downside is, i must have walked over them 1000 times in the past  :'(

The coin in the picture is a George V Penny, to show size of axes.

A big WELL DONE  sarnpoet  ;)
