We called into the castle visitor centre this weekend to see how our cannonball was.   What a laugh we had!!!!!!!   The manager told us that after the farmer had dropped it at the centre they had to evacuate the building for 4 hours and cordon off the castle and its surroundings whilst the police and bomb squad examined the cannonball.   Tee Hee !!!  Manager was concerned the 'bomb' may still be active as the fused section was still attached, so called out the cavalry!!!  The bomb squad were going to blow it up, but decided to take it to Ashurst and get it X-Rayed.  It did contain black powder, but was deemed to not be dangerous.  It is still with the bomb squad at the moment but will hopefully be returned to the castle shortly.  Then there will be a press release and photos of this very rare find.  Me and Ron laughed all the way home, just imagining all those people running around like headless chickens, thinking that the cannonball was a ticking time-bomb.  Ha Ha.!!!   (different story if it did explode though)

Ahh a mortar? that's  even more interesting than a cannonball and far more datable I would of thought ;)

Oh that's a cracker (no pun intended) would have loved to be a Fly on the wall.  You must post the story when it comes out.

Twas in the year 1646 during the English civil war.  The mortar 'bombs' were made at  a foundry in Whitchurch near Symonds Yacht.  Not many were made, some for the Mon Mortar cannon and some for Roaring Meg the mortar cannon at Goodrich Castle.  We feel privileged to have found such a rare article and look forward to seeing our names on the interpretation board as finders.  Tom.
