Title: *Official* DetectingWales.com Rally - Rodney Stokes Sunday 22nd March 2015
Post by: proconsul on March 03, 2015, 09:35:28 PM
After a bit of a hiatus we are finally able to announce the next DetectingWales rally. This will take place on Sunday 22nd March in Rodney Stokes near the Cheddar Gorge. This land has been found for us by Mike and we really appreciate it.

The area has an Iron age, Roman, Saxon and Medieval history and the land consists of pasture and stubble/ploughed.

This will be a DetectingWales.com members only rally and I'm afraid everyone attending must be over 16 years of age. Usual terms and conditions apply. Everyone who attends does so at their own risk and we recommended that everyone has civil liability insurance. If you are a member of a club you will probably already have this. Please check.

The location of the rally will be sent by private message to everyone who has signed up the day before the rally and the rally fee is £7.00 as normal.

Please car share wherever possible, even if you have to meet in a lay bye and share from there as parking is rather limited.

I've put something similar on my 'Introduce Yourself' post, but... March 22nd will be my first rally, and my first real detecting day...

I'm wondering whether anyone would be willing to look after me a bit on the day, give me a steer on what happens on rally outings,  and generally let me tag along and join the chat...not looking forwards to turning up on my own, and not knowing a soul. And if metal detectorists in general are a bit of a rare breed, I'm in that much smaller pot of female and new to detecting...

And more than happy to do the driving if anyone wants a lift from Bristol area...   :D

Looking at the list there are quite a few Deus "old timers" going who I'm sure will be available to give advice ;)
If they don't volunteer just ask, you can usually spot them by their severe muscle wastage and handbags ;D

Hi Anthony,

No test digs are carried out on any Detecting Wales Rallies. We used to visit every rally site to test dig in the past but stopped after a minority of members made a fuss about us creaming the best finds off 100 acres of land.  As silly as this claim was we stopped checking the farms.

We do however ask every farmer whether green waste has been spread and have in the past not visited some very good areas due to this very reason. We have however have been told 'no' in the past only to find some fields infested with the blight.

I'm afraid we will always have to take the farmers word as gospel and whatever is there....is there.  :)

Nice to meet you today Sharkey and a privilege to see the coin first hand, first serratus I've seen in the flesh, this is the bit of gumpf I could find on it ;)

couple of really nice finds there ,unfortunately you can not get a crystal ball out and predict green waste only take the farmers word for it , i myself paid £27 for a rally in wotton basset yesterday and found nothing but foil and ring pulls ,but it was still a great day out with good company ,incedently we were told it was all arrable land ,yes it may have been a thousand years ago lol

That is a beautiful coin sharkey. I was going to ask is it normal to have 'notched' edges but I reckon Geoffs  gumph explains that with the word Serratus.

Very unusual, well found.

thanks again for the comments, yes i walked around for nearly 2 hours unsure whether it was a coin or token, old / modern / celtic / roman, mainly due to the edge and detail. was great to get it confirmed as an old boy  ;D don't think it has sunk in properly yet. has to be the best find i've ever unearthed, and i didn't catch it with my spade  :D result!

What I'd love to know is how it got to Somerset.  The Romans didn't come over till 55 BC and didn't get that far west till after AD.

There was me saying coins couldn't tell a story.  That one could.

Val you've got to think of the coins back then being worth it's weight rather than it's denomination and so they stayed in circulation and peoples saving much longer but could also have come over with trade as the local  Durotriges tribe were trading with Gaul for a long time before the Romans overran it.
I'm sure like many you remember that it  wasn't unusual at all to have young head Vicky coppers in your change right up to the 1970's ;)

It is a lovely coin but Andy has been disqualified as a member of the Chester mob as he lives on the right side of the border ! The committee's decision is final on this, better luck next time. P. S. You can have him back for a fee or if he finds nothing next club dig. 😉😉😉

It's great hearing of all the possibilities, never thought that id find such a thing!

Hey Chris, Chester mob membership lasts for 10 years, after which it is reviewed, so unfortunately for you guys you have an 8 year wait to unseat me!

At last all of our mob training sessions seem to be paying off   :D

Look forward to the next dig

Yes Geoff, I did think of trading but wasn't sure about the location. Still, as you said silver coins were considered in a different light back then.  Silver was just silver to many.  All interesting speculation. Will it have to be reported ??

all find were to be left with customs on the North / South border, I'm afraid rules are rules but as you've managed to smuggle it
across, I suppose you can keep it  ;D ;D ;D
