Title: Do you know what it is yet ?
Post by: Da Monkey on February 28, 2015, 11:27:09 PM
Thats enough of Ralph...   :D

Out for a few hours with Alun Deadlock and SpineyDave and got this little ball of something interesting....
The ball came out with the first spadefull, but the Deus said I'd missed a bit and I then found the seperate bit you can see in the piccy....  recheck of hole again said no more to be found...

I'm just off to let it soak in some warm water, will update with a photo tomorrow when the ball has dissolved :)

Meanwhile place your bets here and see if you are right tomorrow... ;)

(second photo has 2 x centimeter marks for sizing)

Neck chain for a cloak, .. Have I won yet ???

That's what I was thinking Dylan.  Like the Police used to have but they had a clip on each side, so two round thingies.
That looks too fine for that so I'll go for a Victorian necklace for my 1st guess and an Indian design chain for 2nd.

Is it silver ?

Val

By saying that it's to fine are you really saying " Dylan you are the weakest link..... Goodbye "  ??? ;D ;D

Would never have thought of a cloak chain :)   But I think that the chain is a little to fine for that, it seems quite crudely made, but what do I know. Well, a night soaking and a couple of turns in the ultrasonic bath and we get this...

How the hell I go about untangling it is another matter :(

Interesting that is looks to be purposely tied in a knot! Could be something in the middle  ;)

As it's age is uncertain, and if it's silver, that's what it appears to me, my advice would be be to leave it as it is before you go any further and contact your FLO as it could be a treasure case?

My thoughts exactly.  Shame to let it go but it could be something they are familiar with.  It certainly looks intentional. And on second thoughts I don't think it is a Victorian chain. ;)

Have a look at some of these..  I think it could be part of a cloak clasp.

Tested positive for silver today :)  So whatever it is it must have been worthy of being made of silver...

E-mailed the FLO with photos this morning, will wait to see what he comes back with, I think youre right, I'm not going to try to open it, I'll see what he comes back with before I mess with it at all, maybe they'll decide if its worth spending their time unraveling it all ;)

Still don't think its the cloak thing though as it's quite fine chain.

I'll try and come up with a suitable prize for you Dylan if you can guess the FLO's answer right LOL  ;D

Hi Ben, thats what I initially thought, but its a bit to big for a pin head and seems to be on a chain.

Title: Re: Do you know what it is yet ?
Post by: DEADLOCK on March 01, 2015, 06:51:29 PM
It's a thing of purpose,  it looks like it's made up of other bits of  chain as there is a coarse bit in there aswell

Title: Re: Do you know what it is yet ?
Post by: Val Beechey on March 02, 2015, 09:46:22 AM
When I suggested it is part of a cloak clasp I meant one of the button parts, there would have been two.

As in;  one each side of the cloak and a separate chain looped, or hooked over the button.

Hope you soon get an answer from your FLO

Val

I e-mailed the FLO yesterday and he's on the case, he thinks it could be a Tudor Decorative Ladies Belt similar to one in the London Museum, but he's going to get some of his colleagues to take a look and get back to me.

Could be my Third treasure case yet...

So, so far no prizes as we were all wrong  ;D

It was a lifesize photo of me in my Mankini, but its on its way to Dylan now, so you'll have to fight him for it...  I dont think I'd bother lol  ;D

I think you ought to bribe Dylan to keep it, by buying him that Deus... ;)

Wow Cardiffian where did you find that.  It looks pretty close to me.  What was it listed as.

It'll be interesting to hear what conclusion the FLO comes up with but it might be a long wait.

Hi Val. I wasn't the lucky finder. It was found by a friend also called Val while 4 of us were detecting in 2013. This came up off a site that consistently produces roman, through to medieval. The find was shown to several 'experts' and Flo's, and the opinion ranged from roman to medieval. Eventually after much deliberation the item was seen by someone at the BM who is an expert on Indian jewellery, and metalwork. It was identified definitely as being of Indian origin, dating to the 19th century, and would have adorned an Indian shirt. Remember your second choice! I know that the Id on Andy's find is most likely correct. However, I thought I would post, for him and other to see, as there are similarities.

Definately a button Cardaffian, as per link, I think your pictures remind me of a chatelaine (I think I've spelled that right...)  I did wonder if mine may have been something along those lines to start with, but I think the FLO has hit it on the nail with the button for sure.

16 silver wire balls came out of semi pagan Vikingn grave inside Peel CASTL IN 1980s and iam looking on Manx National Heritage site ..My feeling is those Viking balls were more fragile without suspension loops, but it would be worth a follow up with museum curator Alison Fox.. w.Theyere found the knees and lower legs Rob

HI Cardifian, what a great find.  You see they don't always get it right, do they.  It reminded me of Indian because I have one. Admittedly modern, well 1960's, but you can see, as you said, there are similarities.
I bought mine in a Rabbit Warren of a place that used to be in Birmingham. What you couldn't buy there wasn't worth buying. Hippy, Hippy, Hippy.  ::)
