Title: Allotment find and we ain't talking marrows
Post by: Chef Geoff on February 04, 2015, 07:11:33 PM
Hoover-G sent me an email earlier asking if I could id a coin that some one he knows had found while digging his allotment :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
For those who don't know it's a penny of Sihtric who was the Irish-Viking King of York in the early 10th century and it's in lovely condition too so that's the summer holiday paid for ;D

Stunning coin!! I've been chatting too the guy in question and this was his reply

its gone to a new home mate and im a couple of hundred quid better off

I don't collect coins that early , Victorian ones and modern ones are my thing

if you get any nice grade early crowns that would be nice I am getting a passion for those

It turns out the buyer told him it was worth £15-£20 but would give him £200 because he hasn't 1 in his collection and it's nice. Anyhow I'm absolutely disgusted that someone can do such a thing shocking.. If however he finds more while turning his allotment over I've asked for pics first also gave him our forum name too post what he finds up at least he'd get the right ID and a valuation if needed.
The guy is choked what I just told him when geoff ID,d it for him. There's some bad eggs out there for sure

Tell me about it geoff The guy is choked!! Think he's from north England somewhere but I'm not a kind off person too ask where after what he told me regarding this he found eyes only while turning over his allotment.  He says it's all been turned over now and shall keep his eyes peeled. Pics will come too me first before the previous individuals get there claws in and I shall post let geoff know for an ID and rough valuation if needed.  :-\

Great ID Geoff, and hoover I would tell your mate to send a picture to Jon Mann at Spink's Coin department for a valuation estimate (prior to handling the coin of course), If (A) he intends on selling it, and (B) he wants the best price ;) collectors would fight over it I'm sure. oh yes and get your machine over that allotment just in case ;D ;D

All I found when getting my veggie plot ready was loads of broken glass, bits of window fittings and ashes.
I feel sick as a pig for the fella.  What a shame, bet he thought he was on a winner there.  You know what they say,  Act in haste, repent at leisure. ::)

Thanks mate I've passed the info on!! I've only been chatting for the last 4 hours with him and don't know the guy from adam. He does sound like a very nice chap who is more intrested in his allotment keeping than coins that would keep myself and most off up with not a blink off sleep lol  ;D
Think he's more choked that the individual was so dishonest and I didn't speak too him sooner. We live and learn he says and shall be more wise next time. .

;D ;D ;D well in that case he's bought himself a Jorvic penny you could strike them yourself at the Jorvik centre in York circa 1990 and is not silver only pewter...worth about a fiver, Sihtric is the only king who had a sword coinage as fa as I know ;)

Well I have found a Geo V penny in my allotment. The only thing is I think it might have fallen out of my pocket about a year earlier - it was on the surface under the raspberries.

Always thought about giving the allotment a detect, but you know what councils can be like :)
