Hadrian Æ Dupondius. IMP CAESAR TRAIANVS HADRIANVS AVG P M TR P COS III, radiate bust right / VIRTVTI AVGVSTI S-C, Virtus standing right, foot on helmet, holding spear & parazonium. Cohen 1470. nice find though Falcon and is great dating evidence for the land ;) Title: Re: Roman? Title: Re: Roman? Post by: probono on December 17, 2014, 03:11:10 PM I think it's more likely to be a bit later than Hadrian - if you notice on the coin the spear is held in the right hand (left as viewed), where-as Geoff's example it's held transversely in the other hand.
A possibility is a coin of Marcus Aurelius (especially given what I think I can see of the curliness of the hair on the obverse and style of beard). It's quite small for a sestertius, but you can tell by the placement of the 'C' in Senatus Consulto that quite a lot of the edge of the coin is missing - i.e the bit with the really diagnostic legend (probably TRP something) Title: Re: Roman? I found a brooch in the field next to falcons roman coin-looks like roman ? any help with ID would be appreciated- we may have stumbled on a roman site fingers crossed. Post by: Chef Geoff on December 17, 2014, 08:52:13 PM Wow! a lovely little find Sandpiper and you've got a Roman site of some type, it's an Umbonate type plate brooch (Hattatt 535) from the 2nd century and so contemporary with the coin ;)
