Title: An interesting result
Post by: bymatt666 (byron) on November 10, 2014, 02:56:25 PM
                                         An heraldic pendant result
During a rally , held by Detecting Wales nr. Gileston in the Vale of  Glamorgan , I found a small heraldic pendant . Little did I know how relevant this would be to our local history . I handed it to our FLO from the National Museum of Wales , Mark Lodwick , at a club night in August . When he returned it a month later he supplied a detailed report on the artefact and a picture of the grave effigy of the person it belonged to .
The pendant was found within a mile of where it's owner is buried  in the local church. It was the arms of Sir Roger Berkerolles who owned land and
two castles in the area , St.Donats castle and Coity castle . A rich man indeed !He is buried with his wife , Katherine de Turberville in the local church at St. Athan . He died in 1351 so the pendant precedes that date . It's not often we get to know about our finds' history , and being part of our heritage makes it all the more interesting . I am going to make an effort to get to that church and take a picture for my records …..Byron Matthews

Well done Byron - I imagine the local press would be interested in the story.

If you contact them your welcome to mention DW but I would leave out the exact farm name!

Great find mate.

Cheers
Neil

That's a great story! its great to get some in depth info on our finds, it brings it all to life and a big pat on the back to Mark Lodwick for his Detective work.

Great result Byron. Really rewarding when you can 'fill in the gaps'  on a find.

Just proves the importance of using the system.  (when it works !!)
