Title: A Berry Good Day Metal Detecting
Post by: John Winter on October 04, 2014, 11:06:15 PM

… and that's why I was reminded of my days spent metal detecting … at least I was guaranteed to return home with a different kind of treasure!

Yes, a good time of year for things like that - although I've noticed the sloes are ready a bit too early this year.

I got a reasonable crop of hazelnuts on the last rally I was on - I usually avoid the blackberries until they have been soaked overnight (to remove their visitors), cooked in sugar and wrapped in pastry at which point they are very nice :)

Yes love blackberries and all the countryside fruit that comes with the territory.  Had 3/4 of a carrier bag of hazelnuts from my garden

I've had a few picks at the Blackberries and frozen some down for the Winter. Nothing nicer than a Blackberry and Apple pie in January.
I've picked Hazel nuts before and been disappointed with them but this year, by chance, I think I've discovered the secret. Don't pick............pick up.  Wait till they start falling.  I've got loads drying nicely for Xmas.  I don't like the taste of them too fresh.
One of my neighbours just can't resist them. When I'm out walking the dogs I always know where he's stopped for a snack by the pile of broken shells.  I met him out one day,  him, his dog and his nut crackers. ::)
