Title: One for Peter or our american members . . .
Post by: Neil on June 06, 2009, 05:27:08 PM
As a few of you know I have just come back from the good old USofA and whilst there I kept an eye out for any "early" coins in my change, and these two turned up.

One in my change at a bar was a 1941 quarter and one I found on the floor walking through a park is a 1964 quarter. Both appear to be silver worn as opposed to the later nickel coins. Any idea on the silver content anyone?

Cheers
Neil

Turns out that all quarters up until 1964 are 90% silver and 10% copper. So I am pretty please with myself, I guess they count as eyes only finds! ;D

What a shame we no longer have any silver coinage in circulation. There was some talk a number of years ago of introducing a £10 coins which had silver content I think of 85%, but I think with silver and gold fluctuating so much at the moment it will never happen here.

Good finds there Neil , it's a wonder the enterprising entrepreuners haven't filtered them out of the system must be a much greater face value than the nickel coins!

Cheers lads - I hope they have been behaving themselves Terry! they have been a nice bunch this year - last years were a pain in the arse.

Good point Hedgehog - I know of two americans on other sites who deliberately change a $100 dollars at banks for quarters and sift through them during the winter (too much snow to detect} and then rechange them for another $100 when they finish just keeping the silver ones. Last year one chap managed to amass something like 1000 silver coins through the winter months through this method. Sold them and went to the Dominican with the proceeds - free holiday! He doesn't advertise that he does this though or everyone would be doing it!

Its a Hell of an idea
