Title: new starter - Port Talbot
Post by: gentletouch on September 03, 2014, 07:12:28 AM
Hi
New to hobby, not yet bought detector, thought I would ask advice rather than buy something   based on sales hype. Thinking of garrett ace 250. Been watching dozens of vids on youtube. Are there any metal detecting shops in south wales?
I will get one very soon. W/E with luck.

Would have liked to joined your 13th sept, but I am doing a 22 mile marathon for macmillan nurses that day.
Alan.  Aka Gentletouch

Welcome to the site Alan, there arent any detector shops in South Wales at present but buying over the internet from many of the more known shops is perfectly safe. Lara at detecnicks would be a good place to start.

Hi Rob
Many thanks for the welcome. :) I had been searching the internet for a local'ish shop, but could not find any, I thought if there was a shop, I would rather give them my business.  I have no problem buying over the internet and I have been looking online, but I will have a look Detecnicks.

Is there any other Rally dates planed?

Welcome to DW gentletouch.   You'll find a wealth of knowledge and plenty of advice on here.  Great bunch, always ready to help if needed.

Garrett 250 has always been a great starter but what they don't tell you is they're not too good on wet sand so if you want to do mainly beaches you may want to re-think.
There are some really good 2nd hand machines out there and some reliable and trustworthy people to go to. If you decide to go down this route just shout and you can depend on being pointed in the right direction.

Val

Hi All
I must give a big thanks to Rob for recommending Detecnicks, I checked out their website and decided to phone them. I have ordered my Garratt ace 250 and a few other bits, I spoke to Luke who was very helpfull and I got better deal from them, than I could get find on  Amazon or anywhere else online. Detecnicks will be getting more business from me in near future.

Hi Nap
Thank you for the welcome, I am enjoying the site although still trying to navigate my way around. I may need to take up your kind offer of help and advice.  I ordered my new detector and other bits yesterday afternoon from Detecnicks and they sent it out by 24 hour courier ( free delivery ) and my order was about £25 cheaper than anywhere else, but equally important, they were very helpful, so I am very happy and I will be ordering from Detecnicks again.

Today in sunny Port Talbot it feels almost like Christmas eve........ I am waiting for Santa to arrive with my new toys ;D,  so all being well, then I will give it a try in the morning on Aberavon beach for a few hours,  so if you see some grey haired madman wandering around on the beach wildly swinging a shinny new detector,  then suddenly jumping up and down for joy just because he managed to find a ring pull....  don't call the Police,  its not an escapee from a mental asylum..... its only me.

Alan,

Hi Alan,

I'm local too, just over the other side of the hill in Neath.

I've just picked up a detector, will arrive this week, I'll be trying it out on Aberavon too.

Steve.

Hi Alan, only just seen the thread not going to say that I have a garret 250 for sale as you just bought one. Good luck buddy.
I avoid beach work as the. Badger has a radar for the bling lol ;D
I am happy on pasture and from Neath (Briton Ferry) so there are a few in your area to guide you through hands on.
