Val Title: Re: another lead disc lol Post by: Chef Geoff on August 13, 2014, 07:58:15 AM I would say it's a spindle whorl 40mm is a little on the large side as Val says but yours looks a bit thin so the weight, which is the important bit, could be just right, I can't see it being a loom weight as it's way too small or light most positively id'd loom weights are up in the 100'sg range and even relatively modern ones many are made from stone ;)

geoff it weigh s 37 grammes most spindle worls i have weigh between 10 and 15 Title: Re: another lead disc lol Post by: Chef Geoff on August 13, 2014, 08:29:06 AM 37g is good in fact 10-15g is a little low (are you certain they are whorls and not net weights?) as most tend to be between 25-40g the weight of the whorl is dependant on the thickness of the thread you wanted also the the type of material you were using ie flax for linen would probably be heavier than wool. ;)

In view of Geoffs comments I wonder if it's something else. It doesn't show any sign of use, which is strange. The pattern is also strange.
It almost looks like a token or coin with the raised edges. Is it thicker in the middle or flat. Might be worth showing it to your local FLO. Val Title: Re: another lead disc lol Post by: david995 on August 13, 2014, 08:40:28 AM it is flat apart from the raised rims outer and inner edges it does have nice patterning on it and yes its lead but has a brown colouring on it i found it in a field but a very sandy field and wondered if the sand had turned it brown

It's certainly very interesting. I love finds like this.
