Title: Roman Brooch
Post by: herbie on July 24, 2014, 11:51:00 AM
Managed an hour out this morning with the new Deus, (new to me) took it to a roman site where my T2 is not so great and I was well impressed with this machine, as I said only out for an hour and I managed a brooch and a couple of grots :) any ideas on the type? It's about 40mm long.

Nice fibula Herbie - our man Cheffy is DW's very own Hattatt when it comes to Roman brooches, so I am sure he will give you a type and I dare say even a date give or take a year for it!

Well done
Neil

That's a nice brooch mister well done. Stick with the Deus, it's a great machine when you get the hang of it.

Nice brooch.

Was it deep - I don't seem to be getting much depth out of mine - but I think that's partly to do with the weather at the moment.

Well done Herbie to find one complete with pin is unusual but to still be done up it makes you wonder just how they managed to lose it, it's an early Colchester brooch "probably" Hattatt 1458 these are dated 43AD-100AD though I would fix then a little tighter to around the Boudicca rebellion so 55AD to 75 AD ;)

Cheers guys and thanks for the id Geoff :) Still puzzling to find such early brooches, and yet, with the exception of a Celtic bronze core I only find late coinage on the same site.

Nice brooch.

Was it deep - I don't seem to be getting much depth out of mine - but I think that's partly to do with the weather at the moment.

Was about 6-7 inches deep Probono, gave a cracking signal, my T2 would never have found it, too much ground interference.

It's the same down here ??? early brooches and late coinage.......how did they buy the brooches in the early days and how did they keep there clothes done up later on :-\

I know :D I did wonder whether the brooches themselves were some kind of currency / bartering until the coinage became more widespread?? Maybe they continued to use the Celtic coins, but then I would have thought you'd have found more of them if they did.

I read recently (in a Current Archaeology) that in the later roman period the style of dress changed, so not so many brooches were used - hence the drop off in later brooches.

It depends where you were there is an almost east west split in later Roman brooches presumably because of  more continental influence/fashion in the east ;)
