Lovely find there John !! You have some thick concretion on the coin what is hiding a lot of the detail a light clean would make it come up lovely, but don't go rubbing it to much and ruin it, I wouldn't even use the foil trick, a nice soak for that one I think in warm water with a drop of washing liquid give it half an hour, and a soft rub with a cloth..........
It wont remove it all but it should help to make a better looking coin, if your still not happy try a little spit, more the better, as there is powerful enzymes in human spit.

I got this information out of a hammered coin book I have the cleaning processes get harsher and harsher all the way to electrolysis :)

Good luck if you do decide to give it a steady clean ;) Great find

Id say its worth a few more £'s now also :D great cleaning job.

As Probono said its Treaty Period 1361-1369

Look just before Edward and you will see a annulet what could not be seen before cleaning that would make it Spink 1617

The legend reads EDWARD DEI G REX ANGL DNS HYB ZAQT ........Edward by the grace of god King of England Lord of Ireland and Aquitaine

That's an even nicer one now :) - given that the obverse has annulet stops and the reverse has saltire stops, if I could find my copy of North, you'd be able to tie down the variety more precisely.

Despite the coin being worth more now, I wouldn't be parting with it if I'd found it - sadly all my groats are in the museum :( - at least I still have the pictures

Thanks for the chance for me finding my first Hammered steve.
Welshbreed found one first, and told me to search close to where he found his and out popped this one
he could have kept it to himself.
