Title: A couple of hours in the dust
Post by: Dale on April 19, 2014, 12:25:23 PM
I had a couple of hours detecting today with my two boys, its always trouble :D todays hunt was cut short by them kicking mud dust around :-\ it was far to dry for detecting really, I did have a few large deep finds but most was surface due to the dry conditions.

The finds made was a cut half, pendent hanger, silver florin, and a possible coin weight what's very worn.

The finds of the day went to my mate this time with the best early milled silver George 1st shilling I have seen, and a very fine detailed noble weight, plus a hammered or two ::) his photos will follow ;)

And you thoughtfully didn't mention the silver thimble.  Very nice and very well done on the others Dale.

Pici of the boys made me smile. Took me back a few years. ::)

Had a very quick hour this morning, but managed 2 hammered coins, I really did luck out today as I only dug about 15 holes......hammereds are a little like roman groat, you need to dig loads before a good one arrives ::) I think it has arrived today with the hpenny ;)

Ooooohhhhh    Lovely Dale.   Just think, it's been in the soil for 730 years, give or take a few, and it looks like it was struck last week.

Great find.

Val

Here's  my mates finds as I said I could not believe the condition of the shilling, I just wish I had a dirty shot for the album.....The blue tone really sets it off, im glad he never cleaned it as I struck a deal and added it to my collection, even tho im not a milled lover.....:D

Going through my find box I came across the hammered I found in April. I thought it was a halfpenny from the London mint, I was never able to get a positive id on it as things never matched up, so this afternoon I was determined to id it....... I got out big bertha (1998 coin book)... I found out its a very large farthing ??? I never realised there was heavy weight farthings struck at 6.65 grains not long after it was reduced to 5.5 grains that's why the coin is so large and confusing to me.
Its the reversed N's type not mentioned in Spink....Iv added a pic of the coin next to the books example, and a shot of it next to a reduced Richard farthing to show the difference ;)  Plus a 1p
