It it a brilliant piece Nobby and to answer your question when you found it of "is it religious" I think it probably is as the first word appears to be "IESUS" for Jesus but that's were I get lost :-\

Ah good shout Matt which has given me another thought and that is as Elda is a female name (old version of Hilda) it may read IE_SU_S_ELDA which would translate as "I AM THE SIGIL OF ELDA" so "I'm the seal of Hilda" ???

That's what I was doing Nobby. I automatically thought Latin. But had ELDA buzzing at the back of my mind.

Think you're right there Geoff, well ferreted.

Great find Nobby.  Wonder what the variant centres mean.    GEOFF ???

This is courtesy of Wikipedia

In Christian tradition, Mark the Evangelist, the author of the second gospel is symbolized by a lion - a figure of courage and monarchy. It also represents Jesus' Resurrection (because lions were believed to sleep with open eyes, a comparison with Christ in the tomb), and Christ as king. Some Christian legends refer to Saint Mark as "Saint Mark The Lionhearted". These probably false legends say that he was fed to the Lions and the animals refused to attack or eat him. Instead the Lions slept at his feet, while he petted them. When the Romans saw this, they released him, spooked by the sight.

It looks like I.E.S.A.S though, the fourth character is the wrong way up for V or U

Title: Re: seal matrix
Post by: Chef Geoff on March 31, 2014, 07:41:46 PM
Don't you start ;D ;D Believe me it's a V

Post by: Val Beechey on March 31, 2014, 07:44:04 PM

Great find nobby!

I agree the letters are IESVSELDA

This is from a seal description on PAS:

...within a beaded ring, with a legend circumscribed IE SV SEL. This is nothing to do with Jesus (IESVS) but Norman French, 'I am the Seal': part of a longer inscrition sometimes found, such as 'Ie Sv sel a Thomas Viel' or 'Ie Sv Sel prive'

...so it could be IE SV SEL DA  I am the seal  (of)   DA  (maybe Davi, David, Daniel?

Think thats the final piece, Da being shortened for something

Well Da is latin for I give or give but its not Latin the seal ?  Otherwise it could mean I give you my seal/sigil

I'm happy with that Peter but it's frustrating not knowing the name, Da as the first two letters of a given name doesn't figure in the top names from the period so we shall probably never know :'(
