Lovely find Steve a real whopper and possibly a little sad too as it has a date and hair so my guess would be it's a memento mori locket ;)

Wow Steve, well found. Wonder if there's a bit more of the chain still kicking around.

I agree with Geoff. Looks like the locket might contain some of the hair of the poor Gent who owned the Watch and chain and possible he died Nov 22nd 1889.

By the way, you can't count the weight of the watch winder  ;) ::)  Makes a nice change from pennies. ;D

I did a little research on memento mori lockets and your id Geoff seems spot on with the photo and lock of hair ;)

iv added 1 more photo it looks like Dob with a little R above? other lockets iv looked at also have a little letter above?

Steve I think you'll find that it was a way of shortening the word NOVEMBER for convenience by writing NOV.r

So as suggested  Nov. 22nd 1889    The clue to names might be on the front of the locket.  Hubby inherited a silver watch and chain of his G.Grand Fathers with the same Gothic  writing and we could never work it out. Like yours there were 3 over written letters.
Have a look at these letters and see if you can make any sense of it.

I would leave it all as found Steve as part of the value is in the history and use, the watch key is from E J Vokes of Bath. The locket may be a love token rather than a mourning piece as here;

On the 23rd February 1933, an exhibition entitled 'The British Theatrical Loan Exhibition' was held at Dudley House, Park Lane. One of the exhibits was a bill issued by the Bath jeweller and goldsmith, William Evill, the bill, dated 1771, was made out to the playwright and poet Richard Sheridan, it stated:

R B Sheridan

June 10. To 1 Neat Hair Locket.
.......... To 1 Fancy Ring.
.......... To Setting a Picture in a Case.

The hair and the picture were believed to be of the actress Elizabeth Linley to whom he was to marry two years later.

Excellent find.

All you have to do now is look through marriages and deaths for your local area for 22nd November and see what comes up.

Steve if you want to find out what the initials are in the monogram try sending The Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society an email with a photograph and asking who they know may be able to help, as far as I can find out that design is one by Nicolas Verien who's designs date back to the 17th-18thC and were used as the industry standard right up to the present day.
