Title: Minelab Sovereign Elite vs Gt
Post by: stickygreen on March 21, 2014, 05:07:33 PM
Hi all i just wanted to let anyone who may be interested know that after having a very unstable sov gt (now sold) i got an elite and it is 100% better, no falsing at all on the beach and after a good day out with a decent sovereign i can now see what all the fuss is about, im not saying the gt isn't as good as the elite im just saying mine wasn't.  there was someone else on here with the same problems as me.

so basically this thread is for anyone who wonders why their sov gt is not as good as people make them out to be,there must be a batch of lemons about.

well i been using a gt with the ultimate coil for about 5 months now with no issues at all , made some good finds on beaches and inland , very stable in all conditions , deep , easy to set up , I love mine and wont be changing it any time soon  :)

as you said you must have had a wrong un'  :'(

Generally the problem with any version of the Sov is going to be with the coil rather than the machine and I can guarantee you 100% there is absolutely no difference in performance between the original Sov from 92 to the GT, people get used to and comfortable with one version and the way it works and therefore they say that's the best one ;)

The sovereign elite is A great detector but I got rid of mine because I was pi---ed of having to come of the beaches when it started to rain hard (did have A cover on it ) and was always worrying when I put it down on the beach to retrieve any items in case A wave covered it so I  got A White's Surf PI Dual Field for beaches superb detector  and A e trac for inland  ;)

I'm not sure but I think it was metal mic key that had the same problem with the gt.

I've only been out with her twice but she came up with the goodies on our first date  ::)
I don't know what other people think of the Elite, but she seems to sing to me if she wants me to dig, and kind of growl if she doesn't  :P

Just out of curiosity, in what way are they unstable or faulty.  To the untrained  ears like mine is there any dead give away?  Or is it as simple as that they keep switching themselves off or the programmes keep altering?    Probably a stupid question but because I m hoping to get either a GT or ELITE i wanted to know what to keep my eye open for as I,m a novice.
    Thnx.      Shaun

It was incredibly noisy like there were good targets all over the place.if you have ever stood under power cables or next to another detector it was exactly like the interference you get with that.it actually made my head want to explode.ive read a lot about this not so much in UK (but some) it seems more common in the u.s people just live with it I couldn't.

You will probably find its the coil is faulty just bought brand new on from a main dealer could not stable the machine. Luckly enough my mate as had the gt for a few years now so went to see him we established the coil was faulty got hold of the dealer and they exchanged the coil fine now

the same coil is working fine on my elite.

well having used both well all 3 the safari beats the gt and sov elite hands down first 3 trips 5 rings loads of coins and a bracelet proves it to me used elite for 18 months and used to go out with a gt user and beat him every time  ::)

All the machines are as good or as bad as each other you just got to be lucky enough to put the coil over the right bit of ground. And  the goodies will be yours

I'm afraid Metalmonster you obviously didn't have the right conditions before as BBS simply works better, and deeper, on wet sand it's not an opinion it's a fact but the Safari probably does suit some peoples detecting style better than the BBS machines.
If you look at any forum across the world for posts relating to "the best VLF beach machine" the answer is always the Sov these answers are given by seasoned detectorists who have based their answers on experience not because the Sov is a pretty colour.
We all fall fowl of judging a machine by site specific conditions for me it was the Compass Coinscanner (1982) which got me 72 hammered coins from one relatively small field, was it the best machine ever? no of course it wasn't but it was the one I was using on that site.
I'll reiterate that ALL Sovs are the same, yes the very first ones didn't have shielding which cut down their overall performance but since then nothing has changed other than user controls. ;)

I've had one elite, and three gt,s, as far as I am conserned, they are the same, beach mode on elite is just turning down the sensitivity, you have to play about more with gt, but that's just the sensitivity again,  we all know they null by iron, if in doubt dig, in the right conditions you will dig down around two feet, beach that is for me, you do have to go a bit slower for deeper stuff, but if its close to the surface, it will hit it with a faster swing, one thing I think we all know is you have to put your coil over it first, how meny time have you been out, you go one way, your mate the other, they hit it you don't, sods law.

everyone says gts elites are the best on beaches as they were the first real proven machines on it
in my opinion now the safari is as good or better i have found targets at deeper depths than i was with an elite find a lot more because of the quicker processor and feel i am entitled to judge as having used all 3

Of course you're entitled to your opinion but as the Safari is a toned down Etrac/Explorer and the Etrac isn't as deep as the Sovereigns on the beach then I have to question your opinion :-\

well i found a half shilling yesterday at least 19 inches down maybe you should try to use a safari on the beach you might be pleasantly surprised and on land  :)

Yes I'm sure you did but I think you've got the wrong end of the stick, I'm in no way saying that the Safari isn't any good far from it it's FBS and so works very well but BBS is slightly better.
