Title: What A Little Beauty
Post by: Val Beechey on March 11, 2014, 01:40:27 PM
Enjoyed a nice afternoon in the Sun with a new pal yesterday.  Only 5mins into the field and first blood went to Chantal with what looked like a large copper, as yet unidentified.
Not 10 mins after that up turned this little beauty.  At first sight I thought I'd finally done it and was all set to do my 1st Hammy dance.  Not that  old but I'm well pleased with it.   It's 198 years old and it's in nice condition.
I didn't find much else, just the usual bits and pieces but all in all a very enjoyable 4 1/2 detecting.

Val

Nobby, the way I feel at the mo. I could say not that old compared to me. ::)

Just been cutting a 'small' conifer down (about 8ft high by 6ft wide). One of those lovely fluffy little things they put in flower baskets. Finished cutting, having a break before I get rid of the darn thing. At least now I can see down the valley.

Word of advice. If any one gets one on Mothers Day throw it in the bin after the other flowers die.  DONT PLANT IT.

was gorgeous weather and you were great company val, 2 x safari's and their owners hunting around in the sun  what gets better than that  ;D
heres a picture of the george penny thats black with patina and i havnt cleaned it , a brass button thats gone speckled with patina and a watch winder that says E.EYNON Narberth on one side and Jewelry watchmakers on the other side. Narberth is only a few miles from the field.i found reference to the shop online in 1913 but it may have been around for generations before that so i cant pin a date down for it.

I thought that little watch winder was nice when I saw it dirty. It looks even nicer now.  Shame the button has crusted up. Have you tried rubbing some oil on it. It had a nice pattern when it came up.
You can almost see the date on the penny, the early ones aren't usually that good.

Made a nice change to get out and leave the jobs behind. Had to face them today though. Should think a bit more like a man I reckon.  Get up in the morning and wonder 'What shall I do today' instead of 'What have I GOT to do today'

yes when i washed it in mild detergent to remove the soil it reacted with the patina and  now doesnt look very good maybe a little oil or wax will help ??
next time ill just use a dry toothbrush and a wet wipe

Thanks again for the comments Fellas.

Off up the lane tomorrow for an easy dig  ::)  I had permission ages ago to detect a field that was used by the local Rugby and Football teams. Got no idea what sort of condition it's in but worth a shot.
We all know things turn up in the most unexpected places so fingers crossed.

Val
