Title: Teeny Weeny coin ???
Post by: chantalpoole on March 03, 2014, 07:25:07 PM
Teeny weeny round copper or brass judging on the green tone
i would have said it was nothing but i swear i can see a pattern on it poss a head
found west wales up a beach but it might have come down from the eroded cliffs at the top of beach  as there is clay and mud on the beach and i found it under the mud and clay the area is associated with 15th centuary or earlier.
anyone know what it could be and should i attempt to clean it a bit and if so how without damaging it (not knowing what it is i dont want to damage it)

Blimney, that was quick  :D

Could be a farthing, size is about right but I think I can see a crown on it  ???   If it's copper I don't think you'll get far with the cleaning.  You're likely to loose whatever is there.  The copper button on the front page was cleaned in an electrolysis tub and that's come up great.

hi val its far smaller than a farthing it is 11 - 12 mm across a modern penny is 20mm so nearly twice as big.
yes i think i can see a kings head and crown i want to try and clean it up but dont want to damage it.
the beach has a flemmish battle on it in 11 centuary and bones of the vicims were left on the beach and some were found early 19th century so it could even be connected

what should i do leave it alone or try and clean some of the green off.
its more speckly than tarnished ,its not the same tarnish as you get on 19th century copper coins the pattern is there its just obscured by the green

Not much you can do I'm afraid as the green is the surface remove it and you take off the face of the coin :-\

sometimes if you run it under the tap with slowest flow , you  usually get different angles of light hitting the coin , you maybe able to take a pic for id purposes, but alas its a grot of some kind
