Title: Can my Garrett Probe be repaired ?
Post by: Jeff The Wizard on February 22, 2014, 09:21:37 PM
Just wondered if anyone out there has had same problem with Garrett Probe.
Probe has been working fine until today until it wouldn't stop vibrating, even when turned off.
Could it be the switch needs replacing, or something more serious?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jeff.

Sounds like the switch is dodgy m8,

Seen them on ebay for about £4, but have been told they are hard to put back together once you have had them apart, think there's a video on youtube , have a look m8 ;)

It's not the Battery Matt. The switch will turn the light on and off, but the vibrator motor continues to run. ???

They suffer badly from damp - at least the two I've had have.

I leave mine on a radiator for several days, and now have one of those pin pointer socks for them to protect the switch area (which seems to be the main area for damp seepage).

I also took the first one I had apart, and then the switch broke, and I couldn't get the LED back in its little hole. It does work now, but it's not the prettiest (with some help from Woodbob)

For the price, there are few things that could have been done to make it more waterproof - however given the amount of time it has saved me (and some of the things I found with it), it was still worth it.

I think you'll find that if you put a new battery in, it will stop alarming. I get mine wet all the time and never get a problem with it. One thing you can try is put some sanitary pipe assembly silicone (its like rubber tooth paste and doesnt set) on the speaker vents. If you have got it really wet inside, spray with PTFE (teflon bike surface protector) which will expel any water and maintain a waterproof surface on the electronics.

Many thanks to all offers of help and advice to repair my Probe, but I gave it a blow dry and rebuilt the switch and now seems to be working fine  ;D

After drying circuit board out with hair dryer, I was so pleased with myself for sorting the problem, I rushed the re build and broke off the switch while sliding back the circuit board  :-\
What a T**t  :-[
A total rebuild of the switch was necessary using Micro Surgery  :P They couldn't have made those switches any smaller  :o
Anyway, pleased to report it's all sorted and operational  :D

That's sort of what happened to mine (although it wasn't me who broke it!). I think I'll have to try some of that Bike spray stuff, although I found yesterday that now it has a cover it's much better behaved :)

probono, make sure its electrical spray you use, other sprays leave a fine film which will not be good for circuitry

Hopefully there is some at work, somewhere - thanks for the name of the stuff, I can think of quite a few other bits of kit that might need it....

As legio has said sprays for electronics are a whole different kettle of fish, WD40 and GT85 are "mechanical" sprays and can also rot rubber and interfere with components, as far as I'm aware there is only one spray readily available in the UK and that's H2o by Future Developments, not the cheapest but it was made for mobile phones ;)

I managed to replace the switch on mine, £5 for a new switch off ebay. It was a fiddly job and its a bugger to dismantle and re assemble properly. You need a very small point on the soldering iron to de solder the faulty switch as the soldered contacts onto the circuit board are tiny. Not an easy job at all and with high potential to go pear shaped if you're not familiar with doing this sort of thing, I was lucky this time, usually when I try to repair stuff it ends up even more knackered than when I started and goes in the bin  :D
