Title: Which spade is best
Post by: Mark Jones on January 04, 2014, 06:37:53 PM
Hi all,
Whilst I was out and about down Caswell earlier today I noticed a couple of other detectorists were using small spades with a sharp pointed end, I was struggling with my flat edged mini spade as there were hundreds of stones just beneath the surface.
Would I be better off with a sharp edged spade, if so which would, in your opinion, be the best buy. Not really on a budget so would welcome any comments, thanks.

the short spades made by draper the pointed typeare ok but on a busy day will make your back sore bending over .

what I did was buy a mini spade , bought a long shaft , grind rivets off and fit new shaft  , bit of a pain but worth it .

also the black adda range are excellent spades

I use the same one as Matthew suggested and I fill the back of the spade, where the shaft meets
the blade with silicone, it stops it getting clogged up with mud

Think I will have to try and find a longer handled spade, what type do you have Mr Badger?

When I first started out I bought mostly cheap rubbish and they all either bent or snapped and it was a nightmare trying to dig with a bent fold up army shovel lol....buy a good one first as last, it will be well worth it. I got the short Draper one mentioned above and drilled holes to attach a bungy cord so it fits over my shoulder which makes it easy to carry ..... ;)

Get yourself a border digging spade, preferably stainless with a bent over lip at the top, so it doesn't cut through your wellies.
You can get them from most garden centres, and they might be on offer this time of year.
Then set about it with an angle grinder and cut your own point on the bottom.
There a good length to work with ( me being 6'2") and not too heavy to carry around.
It should last you for ages.
Dave

Daves homemade angle grinded thingy is an awesome digger its a hell of of bit of kit, only problem is stopping it cutting through all the stuff you put it near in the boot of the car...

[quoteThink I will have to try and find a longer handled spade, what type do you have Mr Badger?][/quote]
i use two .i have a trenching shovel which is long and thin with holes drilled in it and a long handled spade from b n q with 40mm cut off each side, this has a fibre glass shaft and is very strong.
i dig so much that spades tend to last me about a year if im lucky,no such thing as an indistructable spade, your just not diggin enough holes lol :D
my spades are the best cos they pay the bills lol

Well I have had one of these since I started detecting in 2004. Doubled in price in that ten years but I bet I still got it if I am around another ten years. Spear and Jackson Rabbiting Spade. Well sound.

Yes I bought cheap diggers when I started they always broke so then I purchased a stainless steel black adda sodbuster and have never looked back, they can be a bit weighty to begin with but you soon get used to it.

I presume the above shovels are more suited to land use??  If so, what is more suitable for  the beach?
    Thnx.

a long handled one thats thin like a trenching shovel i find best cos i can use it one handed.,two scoops and the gold is in my pocket  ;)

Thanx  for the quick response Mike.  makes sense I suppose as lighter is better and once I learn to pin point better there's no need for HUGE  holes to be dug everywhere,   :D.     Also gets between those tight spots.
i was sort of looking at those basket type thingys but a bit pricey at the mo, so I better find some gold beore I decide to upgrade.   ;)
