Title: P A S and dating Post by: Dryland on December 25, 2013, 04:37:56 PM Regarding the toy pistol butt found by Simon yesterday , welsh john , and myself last year.
On the Portable Antiquities Site [third picture down] it's listed as "POST MEDIEVAL" and also on the same site , same page , [twelfth picture down ] it's listed as " MODERN" . How is that possible ? or have I missed something ? Title: Re: P A S and dating Post by: Chef Geoff on December 25, 2013, 04:45:24 PM I think it's just been misclassified, modern is the accepted dating as you can see the actual toy in the 1910 Christmas catalogue. ;)
Title: Re: P A S and dating Post by: Dryland on December 25, 2013, 08:54:12 PM Thanks Geoff, I thought it was strange, I wonder how often Things are misclassified or even
misidentified Title: Re: P A S and dating Post by: Svaipa on January 04, 2014, 09:49:03 AM I'm thinking some finds might very quickly be said to be roman, just because we have so much of that in this area and it's assumed it's roman unless it very clearly stands out as something else. Would we really know for sure unless a carbon dating is done ?
Title: Re: P A S and dating Post by: Chef Geoff on January 04, 2014, 10:16:32 AM Well you can't carbon date metals but all id's and datings unless from in situ are based on previous id's and so some faith is necessary but there have been some clangers in the past.
This is probably a classic that has now been corrected but for many years was listed as a classic Celtic horses head Iron Age mount ;) (http://finds.org.uk/images/thumbnails/16186.jpg)(http://finds.org.uk/images/thumbnails/16187.jpg) Object type: Mount Broadperiod: Iron Age County of discovery: Northamptonshire But is infact the end of a ball cock valve :D :D (http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/vv294/Chef_02/231111.jpg) Title: Re: P A S and dating Post by: Dryland on January 04, 2014, 02:52:39 PM Thats classic ;D ;D

Title: Re: P A S and dating Post by: cardiffian on January 04, 2014, 06:12:56 PM Neil posted a cracker quite recently. That was a broken crotal bell described as being a roman bell. I believe it was on an American site.
