On the Portable Antiquities Site [third picture down] it's listed as "POST MEDIEVAL" and also on the same site , same page , [twelfth picture down ] it's listed as " MODERN" . How is that possible ? or have I missed something ? misidentified Title: Re: P A S and dating Post by: Svaipa on January 04, 2014, 09:49:03 AM I'm thinking some finds might very quickly be said to be roman, just because we have so much of that in this area and it's assumed it's roman unless it very clearly stands out as something else. Would we really know for sure unless a carbon dating is done ?
Title: Re: P A S and dating Post by: Chef Geoff on January 04, 2014, 10:16:32 AM Well you can't carbon date metals but all id's and datings unless from in situ are based on previous id's and so some faith is necessary but there have been some clangers in the past.
