Title: Good news today!
Post by: herbie on December 03, 2013, 01:01:41 PM
Some of you may remember I found this lovely ring earlier in the summer. Initial thoughts on the ID were a mid to late Saxon finger ring, with a possibilty of it being Viking.
Anyway I took it to the FLO to hand it in as treasure, he then contacted me to say he actually thought it was in fact a Roman Earring, to say I was disappointed was an understatement  ???

FLO has just been in touch to say the British Museum have in fact identified it as a Viking finger ring circa 9th -10th century........ RESULT ;D ;D ;D

Also the British Museum would like to acquire it should the local museum be unable to.

A truly wonderful find Herbie..Thirty years ago i was looking for a farm part with the local club when a club member unearthed a gold viking finger ring which had 8 strands of gold woven together ...A great find, but two other pieces of Viking gold have been found at the same location..These rings are thought to late 10th or early 11th century..Possibly.when the Vikings were defeated at Clontarf 1014c (near Dublin)..The Royal family, weathly traders and merchants were forced out of Dublin and setttled in Isle of Man,Northwest England and Wales..The Vikings in Dublin had great wealth from generations of collecting it..Most Manx Viking hoards of gold and silver date 1020/1080....Good luck Herbie and get back to that site as i feel there is more gold to be found as Manx hoards prove :) :) :)

I think it's quite an unusual find for this area (south west), although the Vikings were in Chippenham which isn't that far down the road, so could well be a traded piece.

Cracking find. perhaps we'll see it in the Viking exhibition in London this summer  :)
I just can't help wondering if it really was a finger ring. Can't have been very comfortable with the inside of the swirls not been smoothed down. But what a beauty !

I know what you mean, but having tried it on a few times it wasn't that uncomfortable :) I think that may have been one of the reasons the FLO changed his mind on it, but there again I think it was too heavy to be an earring, it would have ripped the lobe!
I suppose we'll never know 100%.
