So hens do have teeth ;D What a find and in South Wales too, Mike found one years ago but I don't personally know of any others.
Way above my pay grade to id, I've never needed to study them :'(...only drool.
One oddity though is that the word PACX around the centre is reversed  ??? which seems a strange mistake to make.
Keep us informed as to what the official id is ;)

it's not Bedford mint , Taf, but I'm struggling to work out what it does actually say (I can read COEN on the reverse, but not much beyond that) - Saxon hammered isn't my forte :(

I'm definitely detecting in the wrong part of South Wales :) Mike already had the saxon on the  farm! - it was an Aethlered penny (can't remember the mint, but it is in Anglo-Saxon coin finds by Metcalf).

Wasn't there a hoard of anglo-saxon - early norman pennies found fairly recently in Abergavenny?

Well found - a fascinating coin.

The reverse legend is completely blundered, which is why a mint or moneyer cannot be identified.

But - there is a parallel already known, on the Early Medieval Corpus, as shown below, and the findspot for that one was the Vale of Glamorgan. Links for the EMC don't work, so I've done screen grabs of the coin on the EMC.

If you can get this coin to Ed Besly for an opinion I'm sure he will be very interested.

Hers a write up I had of the searcher about the coin... The general style of the coin is good. However, it displays a number of anomalies. Firstly, the king's name on the obverse reads EDPArDI; second, PACX in the angles of the reverse reads in the wrong direction;third, the reverse legend reads GIDI COE NEE N (the last letter followed by two square Cs or a fancy cross) and this doesn't make sense in any direction. I'm now definitely of the opinion that this is a contemporary imitation; it is probably but not necessarily Scandinavian, as there is a chance that it could have been made somewhere in Europe. Copies are known of PACX type pennies of Edward the Confessor but I haven't traced one that matches your coin. It's a pity it has been pierced but it is still a nice looking coin. And, of course, it is a great rare find
