Title: Musket ball?
Post by: smudgecd on October 17, 2013, 07:13:39 PM
Found this out today my reaction was its a large musket ball as it is lead  but has a small iron rod which my mate thinks is off a tractor lever but dont think they were made of lead.

Don't think it is a steelyard weight as it would have had a suspension loop. The remains of the iron rod doesn't seem to fit. Sorry Smudged!

Looks like a small fishing weight, the iron would be part of the suspension loop.

If it was a musket ball you wouldnt have an iron pin in it.
Steelyard weights tend to be bigger

How strange, I had a hour this this morning, took the camera for the first time ever, thinking I had a good chance of making a decent find, and this popped out, I could not believe it ;D its also lead with a iron rod sticking out, both items may have been used for the same purpose.

If you ever see hooks or rings attached to a stone wall they are commonly anchored in the wall with lead ???

Yeah your spot on Geoff, looking at the lead I can see some of the aggregate still stuck to it, lol, working with stone masons from time to time I should of realised what it was, but usually you only see the top..... good ID, id never of got that ;)
