Title: Gold Sovereign Advice Please... Post by: 150aceboy on October 06, 2013, 04:32:21 PM Can anyone explain to me, what a half and full sovereign was worth in old money ???.
Also was a crown spendable currency or was it made just as a commemorative coin ???. Thanks Paul. Title: Re: Gold Sovereign Advice Please... Post by: Chef Geoff on October 06, 2013, 04:35:28 PM £1 and 10 shillings (50p) respectively and yes Crowns were normal coins of the realm. ;)

If you ever get any Sovs or 1/2 Sovs and want to sell them, I'll still give you £1 and 50p for them ;D ;D Title: Re: Gold Sovereign Advice Please... Post by: brisad on October 07, 2013, 12:13:10 AM hmmm!
I might be getting my childhood currency wrong chef but I remember the half crown was 2shillings and sixpence (paperrounds") and my ma got us a crown each in 65 to commemorate Winston Churchill's passing. I think the crown is 5 bob (shillings) my dad used the White £5 notes but very rarely! Brian Title: Re: Gold Sovereign Advice Please... Post by: Chef Geoff on October 07, 2013, 06:57:37 AM Hi Brian, yes as you say a Crown was 5/-, the figures quoted were for the Sov and half Sov ;)
